Chapter 6 Rattled
- Hearing that, Denise looked at Alex with a puzzled expression on her face.
- "I'll have you know that you and I still have a marriage contract, and not to mention, but Michael is a celebrity. You had better not cause any scandals that would be bad for the Harmon Family's reputation."
- Denise only came to the realization that Alex thought she liked Michael after he uttered those words.
- But why in the world does he even think that?
- "In case you need a reminder, it will be hard for you to be a member of the Brown Family. After all, you are older than Michael by two years."
- "Enough of this!" Denise stopped him when he was getting way out of bounds. "It is none of your business who I am interested in, so you better cut down on the finger-pointing."
- Alex's face instantly fell at that, and neither of them talked to the other until they got out of the car.
- To Alex, Denise not denying it was her way of confirming his suspicions. Denise, on the other hand, felt annoyed because of his words.
- Alex spent the night being awake just like he always did.
- Ever since he was locked up in the dark house during his kidnapping at age 13, he had suffered from habitual insomnia.
- However, his head was filled with thoughts of Denise tonight.
- For some reason, he recalled last night, and was even missing the feeling of falling asleep with his arms around her.
- His thoughts only further rattled him.
- Is she blind? Why would she fall for a boy who has barely grown hair where he is supposed to?
- Out of annoyance, Alex got up and lit a cigarette.
- Denise's days that followed at the company were fairly peaceful, but as she worked, she couldn't help missing the days when she would travel around the world or laze around in her family manor.
- It was soon the Harmon Corporation's anniversary. In the evening, Denise was dragged away by the Harmon Family to get dressed up to attend the banquet with Alex.
- Many famous people from the business circle were among the attendees at the grand banquet.
- As the President, Alex busied himself with greeting the guests who came.
- Denise had gone to the washroom, and she was about to leave after fixing her makeup when a woman called out to her.
- "Are you Denise Lawson?"
- Denise looked back to see a woman about the same age as herself. With a Dior haute couture dress on, she looked like a rich lady.
- "Is something the matter?"
- The woman stepped forward and introduced herself, "I am Mildred Xavier."
- After working at the Harmon Corporation for a considerable amount of time, Denise had heard of her name from all the gossip going around.
- Mildred was the young miss of the Xavier Family that Alex grew up with. She was also the only woman who had been beside Alex all these years.
- In the eyes of outsiders, Mildred and Alex were a perfect match. There had always been rumors that the two will definitely get married one day. Of course, that was before Denise, who popped out of nowhere, came along.
- "I asked you if something is the matter?"
- Mildred took a card out from her bag and without an explanation, demanded, "Here is ten million. I want you to announce the annulment of engagement with Alex at the banquet tonight."
- Denise let out a laugh when she heard that.
- Somehow it seemed like someone was always trying to tell her off with money after she came to Atland. However, she did note that Mildred was more generous than Catherine by offering ten million instead of Catherine's meager five thousand.
- Mildred frowned slightly when she looked at the smile on Denise's face. "Ten million is enough for you to live comfortably for the rest of your life. You know it is impossible for Alex to marry you. You were only brought to the Harmons because of Grandpa's illness. Grandpa will drive you away after he recovers, and you won't get anything when that time comes."
- "Hah!" Denise scoffed. "Enough for me to live comfortably for the rest of my life, you say? Miss Xavier, this amount isn't even sufficient for me to spend in a month."
- After saying that, she strode away in her high heels and left behind the baffled Mildred. Is she crazy? How can someone from the countryside spend more than ten million a month?
- As Mildred wondered, her face suddenly turned gloomy. Don't blame me for not holding back if you don't know what is best for you, Denise Lawson.
- Alex had already finished his speech on stage, and was conversing with someone when Denise came back into the banquet hall.
- Immediately then, Catherine came to her and warned, "Don't you start going around, Denise. You better sit right there. Don't be an embarrassment to my family!"
