Chapter 7 Does Your Promise Still Hold
- Nevertheless, Lara called Eric first, angrily questioning him where the money in her bank cards had gone during Jean’s hospitalization. The bank card she was holding was an add-on credit card that belonged to the company. Now, the money in it was gone, so it had to be Eric who asked the finance department to do it.
- However, Eric retorted, “You can’t blame me for this. Your mom had a heart attack after hearing what you’d done. Didn’t I kindheartedly send her to the hospital? What’s wrong with that? No one died, didn’t they?!”
- Lara nearly threw her phone away as his words made her gnash her teeth in hatred.
- Eric then added, “Oh, by the way, our company is in need of cash lately, so I’m afraid no money will be credited to that card of yours. But if you’re willing to take nothing with you after our divorce, I can fork out some money as divorce compensation.”
- Lara was inwardly simmering with anger as she listened to Eric’s shameless words. How could he still think of having me give up all my property at this time? she thought. “In your dreams! I own half of our company’s shares. If anything happens to my mom, I’ll never let you off!” she replied coldly.
- Eric seemed angered as well. His voice was full of chilling sinisterness as he replied, “Since you don’t care about your mom’s life, don’t blame me for what’s gonna happen.” With that, he hung up on her.
- Lara boiled with rage after being infuriated by Eric. Her hands clenched into fists by her sides, allowing her fingernails to dig into her palms again. She couldn’t put up with being unable to get a divorce, but how was she supposed to do it if she wanted to get a divorce?
- When she calmed down, she found herself standing at the door of Ward 808. Just as she looked up, a familiar figure walked out of the room. She immediately said, “Thanks for paying for my mom’s hospitalization fees on my behalf. I’ll find a way to return the money later. As for your request, I—”
- Before she could finish her sentence, Kevin Cook, the hospital’s director, came out of the ward. He was also startled to see Lara, but he shifted his gaze to Damian soon afterward. “Mr. Langston, I’m afraid Little Master still needs another blood transfusion to get better, but the blood type he needs isn’t available in our hospital,” he explained with an embarrassed look on his face. Then, he turned to look at Lara, asking, “What are you doing here, Dr. Sullivan?”
- “I—” Lara opened her mouth and was about to speak, but Damian interrupted her, saying, “Who said the blood type he needs isn’t available in your hospital? Isn’t a living blood bank standing right here?” His stern gaze fell on Lara, and his black, sparkling eyes were so deep that one couldn’t tell what he was thinking at the moment.
- Lara was stunned on the spot. Seeing that Kevin turned to look at her, she pursed her lips and said, “Mr. Cook, I can donate blood. My blood’s AB negative.”
- Kevin was stunned before he instantly grabbed Lara’s hand. “Then what are you waiting for? Hurry up and go!”
- Lara stared at Damian as Kevin dragged her away. I didn’t get to say what I wanted to say. Never mind, I’ll take this as me repaying him for the hospitalization bills he paid for me. My blood’s far from being worth 1 million, though, she thought.
- She ended up having 200cc of blood drawn from her. In just a week, she had donated blood twice. I guess I can no longer donate blood again any time soon, she thought.
- After donating blood, Lara was called by Kevin to the office. When he looked her up and down with a gaze that made her feel uneasy, she couldn’t help but ask, “Is there something you’d like to talk to me about, Mr. Cook?”
- “What’s your relationship with Mr. Langston?” Kevin suddenly asked. His shrewd eyes fixed on Lara, making her feel so nervous and guilty that she didn’t know what to say in response. Then, he continued, “Do you two—”
- Lara quickly waved her hand in fright. “No, that’s not it. There’s nothing between Mr. Langston and me.”
- Kevin’s face showed obvious disbelief, though. “How did he know of your rare blood type if there’s nothing between you two?” He hadn’t been the hospital’s director for so many years for nothing. He could tell at a glance that there was something between them.
- Lara felt so embarrassed as though she was about to be stripped naked. What had happened between her and Damian was something that she mustn’t let the hospital know at all costs. “His son was hospitalized in the middle of the night a few days ago, and I happened to be on duty at the time. It was me who donated blood to him,” she replied flatly.
- Kevin’s face instantly took on a knowing expression. After giving Lara a long stare, he slowly began, “You know I’m going to recommend you for the job of assistant professor at this hospital in the second half of the year.”
- “I know that. Thank you for all you’ve done for me, Mr. Cook.”
- Kevin nodded. Then, he took out a piece of paper, pushed it toward Lara, and replied with a serious expression, “Then tell me what’s going on with this. Why would someone accuse you of practicing jobbery by harming a patient’s body on purpose and rendering her unable to conceive? You’re the youngest female doctor in our hospital with excellent qualifications. I’m really disappointed with you when such a matter broke out, you know?”
- Lara took the piece of paper, which turned out to be a notice of lawsuit issued by the court. Reading the notice, she found that a case had been filed at court on allegations of medical malpractice, with the plaintiff being a woman named Sandy Pearson…
