Chapter 15 “Don’t Be Scared!”
- She only had herself to blame for letting Eric discover something about her that was as valuable as this.
- “Lara! Are you okay?!”
- Elaine was shocked to see the look on Lara’s face.
- In fact, Lara was practically falling apart. She curled up into a ball on the ground, and it seemed like she was trying to isolate herself from the world as she buried her head in her knees.
- Elaine’s heart sank—Lara’s reaction reminded her of how the woman was five years ago.
- Lara felt like she’d fallen into an endless abyss with no way back and no way out. She was plunging downward rapidly, and a piercing cold enveloped her whole body.
- Elaine’s voice was becoming more and more muffled by the second. Lara instinctively hugged herself tighter when she could feel herself shivering in the cold.
- After what seemed like a long time, someone scooped her up all of a sudden, and she immediately fell into a firm and warm embrace. The smooth and deep voice of a man came from above her head. “Don’t be scared!”
- Lara looked up and Damian’s face slowly came into focus in front of her. She could even make out the slight crease between his brows and a hint of concern in his deep-set ebony eyes.
- Tears stung the back of her eyes as she buried her head in his arms and let out a loud sob.
- She looked like a poor, helpless child as she bawled her eyes out miserably and freely. As a result, Damian held her tighter and his hand moved up to caress her head. The warmth of his palm gave her a sense of reassurance.
- Damian only spoke when Lara finally tired herself out from crying. “Don’t worry. I’ve already imposed a media blackout on this. No one else will know about it.”
- Lara felt moved by Damian’s words of comfort. She lifted her head and stared at him with glossy eyes, looking pitiful like a cat that had been bullied on the streets.
- “Where’s my mom?” she asked, her voice hoarse. She stared at Damian with a look of anticipation.
- “She’s already been sent to the ER. Why are you still crying?”
- Lara was suddenly snapped out of her sadness, and she immediately rushed to the emergency room.
- Meanwhile, Elaine stepped out of the operation theater with a ghastly look on her face. When she finally laid eyes on Lara, she shook her head. “Mrs. Sullivan’s heart rate is rapidly declining. I’m afraid we’ll have to arrange a second heart transplant for her soon.”
- Lara’s mind was as blank as a sheet. She slowly sank into a chair, her cheeks still stained with tears. It seemed like the only things waiting for Jean were hopelessness and death. She knew more than anyone that her mother’s body couldn’t handle another heart transplant procedure at this stage.
- Seeing Lara’s anguished state of mind, Elaine looked at Damian who was following behind Lara. She asked in surprise, “Did you get hurt?”
- “It’s nothing—just a small injury.”
- Then, he turned to Lara. Coincidentally, she was looking at him too. “Why’re you hurt?”
- She felt guilty all of a sudden. How did I not notice that he was holding me with one hand the entire time?
- Her heart throbbed in a panic as she stared at the bandage around his arm that was almost completely stained red. How did he get injured? Was Eric really bold enough to hurt him?
- Damian went up to Lara and helped her up from her seat. “He agreed to give up on the assets and carry on with the divorce.”
- Those words felt like a dream to her. To think that Eric would one day agree to get a divorce with her!
- If it were a few days ago, she would’ve rushed to see Eric immediately and demanded the man to officially divorce her right away. But now…
- “You need to treat your wound right now.”
- “I’m fine.”
- Damian tried to dodge, but his compromised senses clearly weren’t as sharp as Lara’s.
- Lara helped Damian to the procedure room and removed the layer of gauze around his arm before she started to clean his wound.
- Since she was a doctor, she needed only a look to tell that his injury was caused by a sharp object. His wound wasn’t exactly superficial, though it wasn’t deep enough to cause serious damage either. Nonetheless, her brows still snapped together furiously as she examined his wound.
- Lara lowered her head, her face filled with careful concentration. Strangely, she felt nothing but sadness as she stared at the hideous wound on his arm.
- It’s all because of me…
- “Aren’t you going to visit your mother?”
- Damian suddenly spoke. Lara looked up and glanced in the direction of the ICU. She shook her head and said, “She’ll be fine with Elaine around.”
- Lara knew that there was nothing she could do at the moment.
- Her touch softened as she treated his wound, almost like she was afraid of hurting him. She seemed extremely focused, and she looked even more beautiful with her head lowered and brows knitted.
- Damian’s deep-set eyes gradually darkened as his gaze lingered on Lara’s lowered face.
