Chapter 18 Thinking of Her
- "Joaquin, dinner is ready," Melanie announced calmly, steeling herself against her encroaching fear. She reminded herself of the years Joaquin had loved her, trusting that his loyalty wouldn't easily waver in the face of someone as arrogant and assertive as Zayla.
- Joaquin came to his senses, stubbing his cigarette before joining Melanie at the dining table to inspect her culinary offerings. She had prepared a balanced meal in a short amount of time. The presentation was acceptable, lacking the finesse that marked Zayla's culinary prowess. Why am I thinking about that woman again... Joaquin clenched his jaw, dismissing the thought.
- Seated across from him, Melanie ate her food with measured, deliberate bites. Occasionally, she stole glances in his direction, her lips parting as if she wanted to speak but faltered each time. Anxious and fearful, she dreaded the possibility of receiving an answer that contradicted her hopes, fearing the sting of disappointment. Melanie was a cowardly and nervous woman, all her dreams revolving around a future with Joaquin.
