Chapter 73

  • “No, he has a house but he keeps some clothes upstairs so he can shower and change after the gym,” Bryce replies.
  • I hadn’t even considered the idea before but if he has a house, maybe, he has a family, too. A feeling of dread begins to wash over me when the red-haired waitress hears our conversation and breaks in, adding, “I don’t even know why he bothers having a house. He spends most nights asleep on his office sofa.” That’s a relief. If he had a wife I’m sure she wouldn’t put up with him not coming home at night. With looks like his, I bet he gets hit on by a lot of women.
  • I excuse myself and go back up to my room so that I can shower and dress for my shift. I can hear the shower running in the room next door. I think it must be Dex and I begin to imagine what he looks like, all wet and soapy. I feel a rush of heat and my cheeks redden as my mind’s eye wanders to that big bulge in his shorts. The water turns off and I hear him rustling around for some time then the door to the room creaks open and I rush to my door to look through the peephole. I see him close the door and turn toward my room. He stops outside my door and just stands there for a moment. I begin to feel guilty for spying and wonder if he somehow knows that I’m on the other side of the door. It’s silly, but I hold my breath until he walks away.
