• I’m sitting at the breakfast table, watching the steam rise from my cup of coffee, the scent of it mingling with the freshly baked pastries on the counter. The usual breakfast crowd is here: my father, Dominic, as well as Lucas, Griffin, and Callie. We all sit in silence for a moment, the tension hanging thick in the air, like we’re all just waiting for something to break.
• My father’s the one to crack the silence, as usual. “Have you heard from the asshole?” He asks, glancing at me with a look that’s a mix of irritation and curiosity.
