- The Nightshade Pack's annual Moonfire Festival was in full swing, the air thick with the scent of roasting meat and the sound of laughter. I stood at the edge of the clearing, watching the revelry with a mixture of longing and unease. It had been three weeks since my return, and despite Ethan's hovering presence, I'd insisted on attending. I needed to feel normal, if only for a night.
- "You should be mingling," Ethan's voice came from behind me, making me jump. He appeared at my side, his eyes scanning the crowd with predatory intensity. "It's not safe to be alone."
