• "Owe you?" I raised my voice, feeling the fire within me ignite. "I'm one of the few who has never owed you anything. The only debt I have to you is for rescuing me from the streets. That's it. And I'm more than certain that I've paid it back with all the auctions I've participated in."
• Astrid's expression darkened, and a cruel smirk played on her lips.
• "Do you really think that?" she taunted. "I may have said you're free to leave whenever you want, but there's always a price. Those who have tried before," she pointed to Celeste and another girl, "know damn well what happens when they leave me. Do you want to be the next one to find out?"
