Chapter 5 This is Insane

  • Jennifer's POV:
  • Oh no, this can't be happening. This absolutely cannot be happening.
  • The shock hit me so hard I couldn't even think straight. I almost fell off Brian's back. I exclaimed, "Oh no."
  • "Careful, Jennifer!" Brian quickly repositioned itself, ensuring that my seat was once again secure. There was a hint of amusement in his voice. "I told you, Jennifer, this isn't something you should know about right now."
  • Phew. I exhaled deeply, a wave of relief washing over me. Of course! There's no way I could be the girl Brian had feelings for. It was already surprising enough that he didn't dislike me.
  • "You're right, I shouldn't have asked. I'm sorry." I quickly apologized and was eager to drop the subject. Next, Brian asked a question that made my heart stop. This time, I actually slipped off its back for real, but I barely noticed the pain as I hit the ground. I just stared up at Brain, wide-eyed. "What did you just say?"
  • Brian dropped his head and stared at me. My face must have been filled with panic and confusion. Maybe I had surprised him, because he stayed quiet for a moment before looking away. "Never mind, let's go home."
  • "Oh ... " My heart was still racing, so much so that it took me several tries to finally climb back onto Brian's back.
  • I must be hearing it wrong. There's no way Brian just asked me if I'd be happy if I were his mate.
  • Of course, I wouldn't … I mean, maybe?
  • I didn't know. As far as I knew, every werewolfess in the pack and surrounding packs would kill to be with Brian. Even if it was just for one night.
  • It wasn't hard to understand why. Brian was ridiculously good-looking, with his golden curls that seemed to glow under the sun. And his body—tall, muscular, and powerful. He was the kind of wolf who could fight off several anomalies and still walk away unscathed.
  • I'd heard rumors. Some people gossiped that Brian could last seven days and nights in bed without tiring, but those were just speculations. Those were just speculations. After all, Brian had never had a girlfriend. He was waiting for his mate.
  • What werewolfess wouldn't want a wolf like him—strong, loyal?
  • As the sun rose, Brian carried me back home. I was about to slide off its back. As soon as I move my leg, it bends its front legs slightly. Before I knew it, I slipped right over his head.
  • "Ah!" I yelped, startled, as its snout nearly brushed against my kitty. The unexpected intimacy sent a wave of panic through me, like everything was spiraling out of control.
  • I pushed down the strange feelings bubbling up inside me. My cheeks were burning as I stood up. "Do you want to come inside and rest for a bit?"
  • Brian looked as energized as ever, but it was only polite to offer. Yes, just politeness, I told myself. After all, he did show me an incredible sunrise. I needed to do something to thank him.
  • Brian chuckled. How did I even know a wolf could smile? But somehow, I saw it. He nodded, still in his wolf form, and trotted into my house. I had to thank my friend for suggesting I renovate my door—it was just wide enough to fit a large wolf like Brian.
  • I followed Brian inside and almost immediately heard the familiar sound of bones cracking and shifting. Brian was back in his human form. That was when I realized just how reckless my invitation had been.
  • He was naked! I could see his muscular chest, his defined six-pack, and, oh god, the soft trail of hair leading downward.
  • D*mmit! What on earth was I thinking? How could I invite Brian into my house while he's naked?!
  • "I'll get you some clothes!" My face turned beet red as I rushed to find something for him. I was so flustered that I bumped into the table, but I didn't even feel the pain. My heart was pounding too hard, filled with shame—and something else I wasn't ready to admit.
  • By the time I returned with a fresh shirt and some men's boxers, I found Brian wrapped in a towel. My pink towel, to be exact. It looked a bit ridiculous to him, but it was all I had.
  • I stifled a laugh and handed him the clothes. Brian accepted them and asked, "Why do you have men's boxers here?"
  • "Oh, those are some I made for Claude. He said he liked … " I trailed off.
  • Claude had once told me he loved the boxer I made for him. As an Omega, I earned my living in the pack by making things by hand since I couldn't be a warrior.
  • I clenched my fists, not wanting to say more. Brian's reaction took me by surprise. His face darkened with anger, and he asked, "You made these for him, didn't you?"
  • He growled, then threw the boxer back at me. "I don't need this!"
  • I didn't understand why he was suddenly so angry. Maybe he was upset at me because I told him how Claude had betrayed me. I was about to say something when the sound of hurried footsteps interrupted us.
  • "Oh my god, Jennifer! Where have you been? I've been worried sick about you all night! Your phone wasn't even on … Wait. Brian? What are you doing here? And why are you wearing Jennifer's towel?!"
  • It was my friend, Daisy Bowman. She stared in shock at Brian, clearly confused about why he was at my house. Everyone knew that Brian and I didn't exactly get along.
  • Her appearance made me realize I'd forgotten to lock the door. But that wasn't even the worst part. The worst part was that Daisy loved to gossip. If she knew something, the whole pack would know by the end of the night—especially about Brian being naked in my bedroom.
