Chapter 10 You Seem to Be Right at Home
- Leading a policeman and a policewoman, Janice ran over to them.
- When officer Laskarina Morales saw this scene, she didn't even think twice before putting her hand to her waist and warning Daniel, "Put him down!"
- At the same time, when Janice saw Denise in Daniel's arms, she immediately ran over.
- "Denise!"
- "Mom!"
- Hearing the shout, Denise opened her eyes, which rapidly turned red. Her voice had hints of a sob in it.
- "L-Looks like it's not the time for me to die." When the bald man saw the police, a gleeful look flashed across his eyes.
- "You won't live past tonight." Daniel's voice was impassive. If he wanted to kill the man, it would be a piece of cake.
- However, he couldn't do that in front of Janice. If not, he might make things more complicated, and she might even misunderstand. With that, he tossed the bald man to the side.
- Meanwhile, Janice also rushed forward and took Denise from his arms. She looked all over Denise, nervous and anxious.
- "Are you all right, Denise? Do you feel unwell anywhere? Does anything hurt?"
- After making sure that Denise was fine, she finally sighed in relief and hugged Denise tightly. Her pretty eyes gazed at Daniel, reddened.
- "Thank you."
- "No problem." Daniel smiled nicely. The grim-reaper-like expression had disappeared from his face. It was as if he had turned into a completely different person.
- Just then, Laskarina stepped forward and said, "Douglas Warren, how dare you kidnap a child! Your boss Jacko Berne can't even help you now. There's only a prison cell waiting for you! Cuff him up!"
- Hearing that, Daniel felt a little complicated in his heart. Jacko was the boss of Northside, and he was on par with Tigre. However, Daniel remembered that Jacko refused to be on good terms with anyone.
- So why would Jacko's subordinate target me?
- The officer immediately fished out a pair of handcuffs before Douglas said, "Miss Morales, you can't put the blame on me just like that. Do you have any evidence? Who has actually seen me kidnap the child? What about him? He beat other people up, didn't he? Didn't you see that? Did he bribe you?"
- "You!" Angered, Laskarina was about to step forward when the ear-piercing sound of a siren suddenly reached their ears.
- Daniel noticed that Douglas secretly sighed in relief as he sneered gleefully at Daniel. Apparently, Douglas' reinforcements had arrived.
- Two cars with flashing lights immediately appeared, and some police walked over to them simultaneously.
- "Mr. Dean, why are you here?" Laskarina was puzzled as she looked at the middle-aged man in the lead with his stomach protruding.
- Even if the police received a report about a case as minor as this, Branson Dean wouldn't possibly visit the scene himself.
- Branson was also a little surprised to see Laskarina. "Laskarina? Aren't you on patrol? Why are you here?"
- Even though Laskarina was a patrol officer, her grandfather was Aldo Morales, a retired leader. He had students all over the place, and the power he held was terrifying.
- Branson had received a call from Douglas asking him to help the latter lock someone up.
- After all, Branson could get money from Jacko every month to help Jacko's subordinates with their work, so it was reasonable that he showed up.
- Branson had also diverted Laskarina away on purpose, but he never expected to run into her despite his efforts.
- Laskarina replied, "Oh, someone asked us for help. Someone kidnapped a child in the streets, and when we came over, we discovered that the person was Douglas."
- "Oh?" Branson turned to look at Douglas, secretly gesturing with a look.
- Daniel narrowed his eyes and caught sight of the scene. Just as expected, Branson was working with Douglas. It's obviously a trap that targets me.
- Instantly, Douglas got up and shouted, "I was wrongly accused, Mr. Dean! My buddy noticed this little girl got lost, so we took her and wanted to help her look for her parents. However, this man came over all of a sudden and killed my buddy! He beat us up simply because he can, and if you came a split second later, he would've choked me to death!"
- As soon as he finished speaking, both the expressions on Laskarina's and Janice's faces changed.
- Laskarina was so focused on catching Douglas that she didn't have time to check the injuries of those bodies on the ground. When she saw it, she realized it was true.
- Janice's pretty face was filled with terror. "How… How could you kill them?!"
- Daniel smiled and said, "Don't worry, it'll be fine."
- She was stunned to see Daniel's calm and indifferent behavior. People actually died here, so how could things be fine?
- Just then, someone reported, "Mr. Dean, there are 2 dead and 13 heavily injured here!"
- This immediately caused Janice's heart to sink because she never thought that things would come to this.
- Branson instantly shouted, "Handcuff him and take him back!"
- Daniel didn't resist as he allowed them to handcuff him and push him into the car. As for the person behind the scenes of this trap, he more or less had an idea of their identity. However, he wanted to see who else was involved, after which he would clean these worms out in one fell swoop.
- "Boohoo… Dad…"
- When Daniel passed by the mother-daughter-duo, Denise saw that Daniel was caught, so she instantly began to cry as she struggled to get out of her mother's arms.
- Daniel whispered, "I'll be back soon."
- Janice tried to be calm as she said, "Don't worry, I'll hire the best lawyer for you. I won't let you get in jail because of me!"
- Daniel smiled at her, then said to Laskarina, "Please help me send them home. Thank you."
- At the police station, Daniel alone sat in the dimly-lit interrogation room. His dark eyes were clouded with thought. Suddenly, he said, "Goldshore needs some cleaning up."
- "Yes, sir!" In an instant, a female voice sounded in the shadows behind him.
- "Who are you talking to?"
- Just then, Branson took two subordinates with him as he entered the room and sat down opposite Daniel.
- His subordinates also knowingly went to the corner and turned off the CCTV.
- Daniel looked up and said calmly, "Douglas asked you to lock me up, so what's your next move?"
- Branson dropped the act and said with a sneer, "Since you already knew that, then you should also know the consequences of killing Boss Berne's men."
- In his eyes, Daniel's fate was already sealed, but Daniel had a calm look in his eyes as he said, "Can you live up to your conscience and the uniform you're wearing?"
- Branson leaned in his chair and smiled as he said, "Conscience isn't worth as much as the uniform I'm wearing. By the same logic, if you have the money, I can let you off as well."
- Daniel's gaze turned cold as he said, "Let me off?? Aren't you afraid that Jacko might accuse you of getting money for things you never did?"
- Branson snorted. "Of course, I have to do Boss Berne's bidding, but yours is not a matter that concerns him. As long as you give me sufficient pay, I can always let you go."
- As soon as he finished speaking, Daniel understood in an instant, then smiled a little.
- He leaned backward and said calmly, "No need. You'll be begging to let me go later."
- Hearing that, Branson felt his face turn dark as he chuckled in his anger. "A stubborn one, aren't you? Let's see if your teeth are as solid as your personality! Break his teeth!"
- With that, Branson got up to leave. The two subordinates beside him took out hammers as they walked toward Daniel.
- As soon as Branson left, Laskarina also came back at the same time and said immediately, "Mr. Dean, I feel like something's off about this case. Should we investigate it properly?"
- When she sent Janice and Denise back, Janice told her that Daniel had been a soldier for 10 years, so he definitely wouldn't murder indiscriminately. There must have been a misunderstanding.
- Laskarina also felt that something was off.
- Just then, a shriek sounded in the building.
- "What's that?" Stunned, Laskarina wanted to go inside to see.
- Branson hastily pulled her back. If this girl knew that he was lynching and proceeded to tell her grandfather, he would immediately lose his position.
- "Yes, we do have to investigate it properly. Go and check the CCTV there."
- "Oh, sure." As soon as Laskarina heard that, she immediately turned and left.
- Branson finally sighed in relief. It didn't matter, for the CCTV in the area had been destroyed beforehand.
- He went back to his office and had just taken his seat when a middle-aged man barged in.
- When he saw the visitor, he immediately stood up and piled smiles on his face as he said in surprise, "Mr. Jenkins, what brings you here so late at night?"
- Bobby Jenkins had a grave look on his face as he said in anger, "Branson! What the hell did you do?!"
- The sudden insult confused Branson as he hastily said, "M-Mr. Jenkins, what are you talking about?"
- "Stop feigning ignorance and tell me the truth. Who did you capture?! Did you know? Just now, Southland's Prosecuting Attorney's Office called up the mayor of Goldshore, then the mayor called up Mr. Clinton, the secretary so that I would come over and tell you to let the person go immediately!"
- Hearing that, Branson shuddered all over, the smile on his face freezing. He recalled what Daniel had said just now.
- You'll be begging to let me go later. Could it be…
- He seemed to have realized something as his pupils constricted. Seeing that, Bobby shouted, "You really caught someone?! You've landed me in huge trouble!"
- Just then, another middle-aged man, who wore a white shirt and a pair of spectacles, hastily rushed in. Seeing him, Bobby hastily greeted, "Mr. Clinton!"
- When Branson saw that, his expression changed on his instantly pale face!
- This is the secretary of Goldshore!
- The secretary had come to his own jurisdiction simply because he had locked a certain person up!
- How terrifying can Daniel's identity be?! Douglas, you've really cursed me this time!
- Branson's body was instantly drenched in cold sweat. He trembled uncontrollably, fear and uneasiness written all over his face.
- He continuously cursed Douglas and everyone in Douglas' family.
- As soon as Henry Clinton walked in, he asked coldly, "Where is he?"
- Bobby whipped his head around and said in anger, "He's asking you where the person is!"
- Startled, Branson hastily said, "O-Over here."
- He took the two leaders to the interrogation room, only to find his two subordinates lying on the ground, out cold.
- Daniel, however, was sitting on his chair in one piece. When he saw the visitors, he didn't express any surprise, as if he had expected this from the start!
- Henry walked up to him and said anxiously, "Mr. Hardon?"
- "You came earlier than expected," Daniel said calmly.
- Henry's expression immediately changed as he turned around and barked, "Hurry and undo the handcuffs!"
- Bobby also sent a kick and reprimanded, "What are you zoning out for? Hurry!"
- Branson was stunned as he scrambled to get the keys, then trembled as he undid the handcuffs. Daniel sat there calmly. There was a bone-chilling coldness in the room.
- Henry and Bobby stood where they were, their hearts pounding.
- As for Branson, he was so terrified that he dared not move, and he didn't even dare to raise his head.
- "You guys seem to be right at home in your positions, eh?"
- Daniel's words were delivered in extreme calmness.
