• I HEARD the crunch of leaves behind me seconds before I heard the scream. I ducked to avoid the dagger thrown at my head and whipped around with one leg out. My attacker was quick enough to leap over my leg and step back.
• I regained my feet, thinking quickly. I was almost sure it was Anna I'd heard screaming, and that meant she was still alive but in immediate danger. If I didn't get to her soon, I might not be able to help her.
