Chapter 25
- She was in his car, still not coming out too well from the surprise of the gift Maximiliano had given her, she wondered how wealthy you had to be to give a person a necklace worth about thirty thousand dollars without flinching even a little. "A lot, I guess," she said in her mind, watching him drive with a neutral expression. The doubt of whether when that deal was over, she would have to give it all back, settled in her chest, she supposed she would... although she wasn't too sure, in fact, she had no idea if at some point she would have to give it back, but if he was rich enough to have spent some seventy thousand dollars almost without blinking an eye, why would he ask her to return those clothes? Amelia twisted her head around, she was looking for mental reasons to at least keep some of those precious accessories he had bought her.
- The silence between them was broken by the sound of a call from Amelia's phone, who answered immediately. Maximiliano realized that it was Amelia's mother, when he heard her say "what's wrong, mom?" with a tone of certain concern, which made him wonder if they had a bad mother-daughter relationship -which he doubted, considering Amelia's desperation to leave the mansion to see her mother-, or if the woman was ill, or something like that.
- The man watched as Amelia almost sobbed, he looked at her without discretion, the woman swallowed her tears, he had no idea what they were telling her - for the first time he wished he could eavesdrop on someone else's call - but it seemed to be something horrible, perhaps tragic news, the man guessed, having no idea what to think. He was oblivious to the fact that Amelia's mother, was dying by the second, was oblivious to the fact that the woman was beginning to lose her hair, and had not even undergone the chemotherapy the doctor had recommended. The woman wiped away the beginning of her tears, telling herself that she would not cry in front of anyone, that she would only deal with her pain alone. When he heard Amelia say, "Yes, of course; I'll be there soon. Goodbye, mom, I love you very much", he knew that the conversation was over, and the doubt to know what was happening, had settled in his throat, but he knew it was not something that concerned him too much. Amelia's silence finished revealing it to him.
