• The last few days had been pure hell. My phone wouldn’t stop vibrating with George’s insistent messages, as if he were trying to pull me back into a life I had left behind. He always had that manipulative way about him, but now it was bordering on the ridiculous. “Let’s start over, Clare, for the baby,” he said in every message. As if a child were reason enough to erase all the betrayals, the lies, and the control he tried to exert over me.
• I sighed, tossing the phone to the other side of the couch and sinking into the cushions. Every time I saw George’s name on the screen, something inside me burned with anger. He was so desperate to force his way back into my life, but he didn’t understand—or pretended not to understand—that there was no going back. It didn’t matter whose baby it was, George was not part of my future.
