Chapter 5

  • USHER'S POV
  • I stumble back to my seat, my legs have suddenly grown weak. It's my turn to take deep breathes, but they aren't helping. I feel like my heart is punching its way up my throat.
  • A twin sister?!
  • How can my mother be telling me this now?!
  • I have grown up without a sibling. Not that I wanted one. Because if there was someone else to take half of the little my mother could afford, I would have had the most miserable life. My mother isn't smart or hardworking. She is self-centered and fainéant. But giving out a living child is outrageous even for someone as irresponsible as her.
  • I wouldn't have been opposed to finding a sibling now that we have all the basics we need. But a twin sister poses a threat to my quest for marriage with Prince Hayden. I had hoped the prophetess was wrong for the first time because I didn't see a way anyone can look as perfect as I do. But just like people say, that woman is never wrong!
  • "Life was tough for me when you were born. I knew there was no way I could afford to raise two kids on my own, I had to get rid of one. You should be happy I chose to keep you!" Mother says wiping off tears.
  • I know whoever my twin sister is, her life must have been a lot tougher than mine. But there is nothing more precious than being Hayden's true mate. I wouldn't mind having been the one given out like worthless goods if that means I become Hayden\'s wife and live for a millennia.
  • "Who is this poor woman you gave my sister to? Where does she live now?" I demand.
  • "Her name was Catherine. She was in the ward next to mine but her child was dead even before she gave birth. She was from a poor background but unlike me, she had a husband. So I surrendered your sister to her and hoped they would at least feed her until she grows up to fed for herself. I didn't ask much about where they would live because all I wanted then was to wash my hands of the responsibility." She answers.
  • She did wash her hands indeed, at least for nineteen years. Because now the responsibility she was evading, could be Hayden's true mate.
  • "What was my sister's name?" I ask.
  • She shrugs.
  • "I don't know. The woman wanted to name her herself. But I heard her say something like . . . Ella. I am not sure that's what she called her." She replies.
  • What a mother! She didn't even care to learn what her daughter would be called? How am I going to find her without knowing the name? I can't wait until Hayden finds her. Perhaps if I find her myself, I can give her some money and ask her to stay away from this kingdom. That way Hayden will never know such a person existed and will finally give up avoiding our marriage.

  • BELLA\'S POV
  • Being dressed in deluxe dresses and expensive jewels isn't what I had expected when I arrived here. Other slaves are working outside, being monitored by guards with whips.
  • The Luna says it's not because I am lucky, but because they bought me for a different purpose other than working. I am yet to know what that purpose is.
  • Currently, the Luna's maids are styling my hair, using golden beads to hold it on place. The Luna watches while taking a glass what I suppose is wine.
  • "You look lovely! I don't know what Angel Usher looks like, but I am certain she isn't this beautiful!" One of the maids say.
  • "Look at yourself in the mirror." She directs.
  • I rise and walk to the full length mirror on the wall. I am dressed in an elegant, blue dress and white heels. I have never worn raised shoes before, they don't feel comfortable but they do look nice.
  • I approach the mirror and gape at my reflection. I wave a hand just to make sure it's my image staring back at me.
  • I look stunning!
  • "I never thought someone could look as beautiful as that vixen named Angel Usher! I also didn't think that person would be nothing more than a pathetic slave!" The Luna says with a smirk.
  • "Now follow me back to the Alpha's office, he will let you know exactly why we purchased you!"
  • My hands shake!
  • There was a reason they purchased me other than I working?
  • I am scared of whatever else they plan to do with me. The Luna walks to the door, I follow.
  • "Just because we cleaned you up, it doesn't mean you're no longer a slave! Lower your stupid head!" She snaps.
  • I had forgotten that all slaves here walk with their gaze on the floor.
  • I lower my head and follow the Luna.
