Chapter 1
- NARRATOR'S POV
- August 4, 1612
- There was grumbling in the dark sky as the rain poured down heavily in Hanyang City. In Prime Minister Kim Dae Jung's residence, all the maids were running in and out of Madam Kim's chamber who was in labor. The Prime Minister stood outside with his six-year-old son, Dae Young, and his heart raced as he listened to his wife screaming in pain. He wanted more than anything to ease that pain, but he knew that there was nothing he could do than to pray to God that his wife have a safe delivery.
- After four excruciating hours, the crying of a baby could be heard from inside the room, making Dae Young jump in happiness. The maid came outside and bowed to the Minister.
- "Your Lordship, it's a baby girl."
- He grinned from ear to ear as immense happiness filled his heart. "What about my wife?" he asked.
- "She's fine," the maid replied with her still facing the ground. "You can see her when the maids are done cleaning her up."
- "Good. You can leave." He turned to the door with a big smile on his face as he gave a gentle squeeze to the hand of the little boy he was holding.
- At that same time in the royal palace, King Yi Yeon paced back and forth in front of the queen's chamber who was also in labor. It was their first child together which they had been praying for since they got married. He had been waiting there for five hours which felt like a lifetime and beads of sweat formed on his forehead as the cries of his queen grew louder by the second.
- The wailing of a child made him stop in his tracks. He turned to the entrance of the chamber with wide eyes. The door opened and a maidservant stepped out with a huge smile on her face. She dropped to her knees.
- "Your Majesty, it's a prince."
- The joy in my heart doubled upon hearing the news.
- Finally, the heir to my throne has arrived.
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- A week later.
- In the royal palace.
- The Prime Minister and his family walked into the grand hall filled with all thirty ministers with gifts for the young prince. The walls of the grand hall were painted dark red with a touch of blue on the pillars. The minister stood in two rows on each side of the hall. King Yi Yeon sat on the throne with his queen beside him, who was holding the little prince in her arms.
- "Greetings, Your Majesty." They bowed to the king and queen. "We have come to congratulate you on the birth of the crown prince," the prime minister said.
- "Thank you, Prime Minister Kim." The king smiled. "Congratulations to you too on the birth of your daughter."
- "Thank you, Your Majesty," he replied before pointing at the boxes of gifts behind them. "These are the little gifts we have brought for the crown prince, we hope that Your Majesty accepts them with a big heart."
- "How can you call this little?" The queen said as she looked at the number of boxes behind them. She had counted up to eight and there were still more of them. "Your humbleness never ceases to amaze me."
- "Crown Prince Yi Sun accepts your gifts." The king laughed. "What's her name?"
- "Jungmyung. Kim Jungmyung," Prime Minister Kim replied.
- "Bring her to me." He stretched his hands out and the prime minister's wife stepped forward to place the little girl in his arms. The King smiled as he gazed at her sleeping form.
- "She's such a beauty just like her mother."
- "Thank you, Your Majesty." She bowed. After staring at the baby girl for some minutes, the king glanced up at his parents.
- "Because of your family's loyalty towards the royal family and your contribution to its growth, I would like to bestow your daughter with a gift. A gift that would last for a lifetime," he said, making the couples look at each other in confusion. "I, King Yi Yeon, hereby betroth Kim Jungmyung to the Crown Prince, Yi Sun. She will grow up and marry the crown prince when he ascends the throne and become the Queen of Joseon."
- Everyone in the room including the couple and their six-year-old son, Dae Young, fell to their knees to accept the king's decree. With their heads bowed, they chorused, "Your grace is immeasurable, Your Majesty."
- The prime minister glanced up to meet the king's eyes who stared at him like he was trying to pass a message. Understanding what the king was telling him, the prime minister nodded which made the king sigh in relief.
- Note: Hanyang is the capital city of Joseon.
