Chapter 10 The Ego and Biases of the Boss

  • Angela's heart would race with fear every time she saw Wilhelmina. With just a glance, I can tell this woman is not a nice person. Otherwise, why would she plot against me? "Oh, you know my aunt, Miss Prescott? As I was recovering from surgery, my aunt moved in to care for me." She tried her hardest to remain calm while plastering a slight smile.
  • Next to her, Lana nodded and played along. "Angie's mother is so worried because she's here in Drumston all alone, so her mother would frequently call me to ask me to keep an eye on her."
  • How likely is it that this is just a coincidence? Wilhelmina decided to believe in it just once and shot Angela a dark look. "I'm warning you, stay away from Conrad. If you dare seduce him, I'll skin you alive and shatter every bone in your body."
  • After hearing this threat, Angela inhaled deeply. Goodness! Does she consider me to be her love rival? She thinks far too highly of me. "Miss Prescott, has there been some kind of misunderstanding? I have been staying far away from Mr. Heathcliff. In the entire year, I can only see him once. There will never be any interactions between us. Please be at ease." She did not want to talk to Wilhelmina for another second, so she swiftly pulled Lana over to the cashier.
  • However, Wilhelmina stared at her retreating back with a sinister glint in her eyes. The more she thought about the situation, the more uneasy she felt. Has she indeed terminated the pregnancy? Or have I just been lied to?
  • ...
  • On the other hand, Angela breathed a sigh of relief when she reached her apartment's entrance. When she opened the door, she was greeted by a tall male figure, giving her the second shock of the day. "M-Mr. Heathcliff, what brings you here?" It was the first time she had seen Conrad inside the unit since moving in.
  • "I was passing by." His voice was bland and calm. He was on a routine check to ensure no potential hazards for his unborn child.
  • "Oh." While saying this, she poured herself a glass of water and sat on the living room couch, sipping her water to calm her racing heart.
  • In the meantime, Lana soon told Conrad about their encounter with Wilhelmina.
  • Afraid that he would be upset by what happened, Angela hurriedly added, "Don't worry, Mr. Heathcliff. I successfully explained it all away by claiming Lana as my aunt. Miss Prescott did not suspect a single thing."
  • After hearing this, Conrad frowned. I have no doubt that Wilhelmina is a scheming witch. It is not her whom I am most afraid of; rather, the people I'm genuinely worried about are the ones who shouldn't find out about this. "From now on, remember to report it to me as soon as possible, no matter what happens."
  • "Okay," Angela replied with a nod. I had something else I needed to tell him. I was going to send him a message this evening, but now that he's here, I can just say to him in person. "Mr. Heathcliff, I withdrew 15,000 from the card this afternoon. Don't worry; I'll repay the money along with the 7,500 I still owe you."
  • In response, the corner of his mouth curled up in mockery. Is this another one of her tricks? It has dawned on me that she is a cunning woman with many tricks up her sleeve. "That is under your expenses. You do not need to report it to me. All you need to do is your job."
  • As Angela suddenly recalled the accidental kiss they had shared earlier, her cheeks began to burn, and she hurriedly grabbed the glass of water and took a sizable gulp from it. "I am simply a harmless woman who is honest and well-behaved."
  • As if! Conrad's eyes quickly darkened with derision in response to her words. She has the acting chops, but she's picked the wrong target, and I can see right through her lies instantly. "Enough. Schemers die faster," he declared.
  • Huh? My heart is as pure as snow. How could he call me a schemer? He obviously speaks this way because of the arrogance and biases of being in the top one percent of the population. Ultimately, Angela could not be bothered to defend herself. He is free to think whatever he wants because it will no longer be my concern once the baby is born. "Relax, Mr. Heathcliff. I will do my job as the carrier until the day of labor." Following this, she stood up and headed to the bathroom to shower before enjoying a delicious dinner without allowing a particular individual to dampen her spirits.
  • In the meantime, Conrad reclined on the couch with a cup of tea in hand, and when he saw how late it had gotten, he decided to leave.
  • Suddenly, a scream tore through the apartment. "Aah!"
  • He abruptly shot to his feet and scrambled toward the bathroom.
