Chapter 1 Got Pregnant Out of Nowhere

  • "Congratulations, you're pregnant!"
  • Seeing the faint smile from the doctor, Angela Banner felt like she had just heard the biggest joke of the century. How could she be pregnant when she had been single her whole life? She was not a Mangrove killifish either; she could not reproduce asexually!
  • "Doctor, you must've made a mistake. I can't possibly be pregnant."
  • "Didn't you have an artificial insemination last month?"
  • What? Angela almost fell off her chair. When??
  • "I've been single since I was born. Why would I undergo artificial insemination? I only had a check-up."
  • The doctor peeked at her in astonishment. "You surely did, according to the medical records. The doctor who performed the surgery has already left, so I don't have all the details. If you don't want the child, I can help you schedule an abortion."
  • Angela felt like the sky was falling. Goodness, what on earth is going on? Am I seriously pregnant? After she used up all her money to pay her brother's medical bills yesterday, she even had to pay for her meals on credit. How was she supposed to afford an abortion?!
  • Ears abuzz, she stood up and stumbled out of the hospital. She had just gotten to the hospital's main entrance when a woman grabbed her and asked, "Angela Banner?"
  • She turned her head, only to jolt to a stop. Isn't this the company boss' fiancé, Wilhelmina Prescott?
  • "How can I help you?"
  • Wilhelmina handed her a business card. "I'll give you 150 thousand if you hand me the baby once they come to the world."
  • What? Angela felt her heart skip a beat. "How did you know I'm pregnant?"
  • Wilhelmina glared at her. "Don't waste time making pointless conversation. Just do as I say."
  • Still, how could Angela not ask? She was not an easily manipulated fool. "I won't agree unless you explain everything clearly."
  • Wilhelmina frowned, growing somewhat frustrated. Her gaze held a hint of malice when it swept over Angela's belly. "Truth be told, the child should be mine. I registered it with a Brundellian name, which happens to be the same as yours. But that damn doctor made a mistake and performed artificial insemination on you instead."
  • Angela was now in shock on top of being in disarray. So, this child's father is… my boss? How did I end up in such a bizarre situation? "I… need to think about it." She could not possibly make an immediate decision for something so important.
  • "I'll wait for your news tomorrow. And you're dead if you dare to breathe a word about this." The woman then left.
  • Angela's heart was a tangled mess on her way back to the office. 150 thousand was a tempting sum to her. She desperately needed money for her sick brother, as the medical expenses were an endless pit. Could she continue to live a normal life if she had a child?
  • With a troubled expression, she entered the elevator. Just as the doors were about to close, a tall and imposing figure walked in.
  • Her heart thumped so loudly that it almost burst out of her chest the moment she saw the man. It was her company's boss, Conrad Heathcliff, who happened to be the father of the child in her belly! You're indeed bound to meet the people you don't wish to meet, she lamented. She had only been lucky enough to meet him once ever since she joined the company.
  • That brief encounter with the man so handsome and outstanding that even the gods were envious was enough to be etched in her memory for a lifetime.
  • "H-Hello, Mr. Heathcliff."
  • Conrad did not know her at all. Out of politeness, he nodded while maintaining his aloof expression.
  • A convinced Angela knew he had no idea his 'seed' had been planted in the wrong place. He would not have remained so calm if he had known that his child was inside her belly. She subconsciously caressed her lower abdomen as the mix of emotions washed over her at the thought of being pregnant with his child out of nowhere.
  • The atmosphere in the elevator gradually became stifling. She fixed her gaze on the elevator floor indicator, dying to get out of there as soon as possible.
  • Just as they arrived on the fiftieth floor, the elevator shook violently, and the lights went out before darkness engulfed the space. Unprepared for the sudden incident, Angela lost her balance and fell to the ground with a thud. "What's happening? Is the elevator malfunctioning?"
  • "Don't move." Conrad immediately pressed his body against the wall. He had experienced even the greatest storms and knew how to handle emergencies. With a calm expression, he took out his phone and turned on the flashlight. However, the elevator shook violently again.
  • Angela's legs were already weak from the shock. As the elevator jolted, she stumbled forward and collided with the solid body before her. Dizzy and disoriented, she tried to get up, only to find herself unable to move.
  • Her head was stuck… between two 'big pillars'!
  • Her mind went blank from panic as she began to grope aimlessly on the 'pillars,' feeling out in every direction. Before long, she vigorously shook her head from side to side, hoping to free herself. Despite her efforts, she could not budge. "I-I'm stuck…"
  • Conrad's face had turned livid at that point. This was the first time a woman had caressed him everywhere there was to touch. Is she trying to seduce me?! A flicker of anger sparked through his deep, dark eyes as he grabbed the woman's wandering hands. "Try moving again, and these arms won't be yours for much longer."
  • Hearing that, she sobbed, "Mr. Heathcliff, I'm seriously stuck. If I'm bound to die today, I have a secret I want to tell you."
