  • The afternoon sun barely filters through the heavy drapes of my room, casting elongated shadows across the floor. The warmth of the blanket wrapped around me does little to chase away the chill of everything that happened. My body aches, but it’s nothing compared to the weight pressing on my mind.
  • Susan had come earlier, her gentle hands tending to my wounds with practiced care. She didn’t say much, but I could see the worry in her eyes, the way she hesitated before leaving. It wasn’t pity—I would have despised that. It was something else. A silent acknowledgment of what I had been through.
