- I rouse a couple of times in the night, and each time I reach for the sleeping girl in my bed and pull her close before dozing off again.
- It’s just after five thirty when I finally wake. The room is filled with light. I’m guessing the sun has just risen above the horizon, because the river outside is a coppery color, a beautiful pinky-orange. A kingfisher is sitting on the fencepost to the left, still as a statue. Its turquoise feathers gleam like a precious jewel.
