• My heart is banging on my ribs, but I make myself sit still as I study Alice’s face in the semi-darkness while she strokes my cheek.
• I don’t like her talking about this being our last night together, but I’m not yet sure what I can do about it, and the answer isn’t going to come to me sitting in the car.
