Chapter 8 In Need Of Revenge

  • Alex's POV
  • Instead of taking the luxury car, my newlywed wife insisted on taking the subway. It was odd. And was it really something to flaunt, running and jumping around in front of someone paralyzed from the waist down?
  • I thought Vera lacked emotional intelligence. No wonder she had such a hard time, even getting driven out of the Starfield Pack.
  • I found her at the entrance of the Partner Administration Bureau, right after she had been rejected. Coincidentally, I had been stood up as well. She seemed on the verge of tears after being turned down, so I proposed she marry me.
  • It was perfect—I needed a wife to fend off my grandfather's constant pressuring.
  • My grandfather was the Alpha King of the Moonlight Pack. The original plan was for my father to succeed him, but my father died in a battle. With no other choice, my grandfather continued leading our pack.
  • Later, he took a liking to me and decided I should be his successor. But a car accident a decade ago left me severely injured, paralyzed from the waist down. It wasn't just a random accident—it was a meticulously plotted scheme. No pack would ever accept a paraplegic as their Alpha. Since then, my grandfather only wished for me to live a peaceful life. But I had no intention of letting it end that way, nor would I let those who harmed me go unpunished. One day, I vowed, I would eliminate them one by one.
  • Over the years, I concealed the fact that my legs had recovered, continuing to use the wheelchair to lull my enemies into a false sense of security. Meanwhile, I had a slight issue with my wolf—it sometimes lost control. I needed to fully rein it in before I could truly vie for the position of Alpha King.
  • I was also working to integrate the pack with human society. Werewolves were incredibly powerful, and humans seemed as insignificant as ants in comparison. We could easily crush them, but their intellect was commendable. Whether it was making money or advancing technology, they were quite impressive. Humans could even travel to the moon on rockets now! I believed we could use human intelligence to accomplish more.
  • I had done some research on Vera—a pitiful little werewolf. Her father was irresponsible, marrying another woman, and her mother had been in a coma from an accident, still unconscious. Vera herself was exiled from the pack for selling her own body. But none of that mattered to me. I just needed a wife to appease my grandfather. The best choice was someone like Vera, with no significant background, only wanting a bit of money.
  • But I must admit, Vera was strikingly beautiful, and her figure was unexpectedly impressive. When I returned home and saw her bent over, rummaging through the wardrobe with her back to me, I was overwhelmed by a powerful urge.
  • It wasn't that women hadn't tried to seduce me before, but never so blatantly. I can still remember the beads of water tracing down her delicate back, then cascading down the curve of her hips. It was simply too intense.
  • To my surprise, she was flustered and shy when I returned unexpectedly. Almost immediately, I saw her blush from head to toe. She didn't know where to place her hands, as if trying to cover herself. Despite her efforts to shield the critical areas, the slender contour of her legs and the fullness of her chest were impossible to hide.
  • She retreated into the bathroom like a timid hamster, making me wonder if she was playing hard to get. If so, she was halfway successful—she had certainly piqued my interest. For a fleeting moment, I even wondered if she would be just as passionate if I were to win her over.
  • I fetched a bath towel and brought it to the bathroom. If she was really trying to seduce me because of my status and hoping to gain more wealth, she would seize this opportunity. After all, I had let her sense my desire.
  • Surprisingly, she declined. She didn't even let me see her. After taking the towel, she tightly shut the bathroom door. I even heard her lock it from the inside.
  • I couldn't help but laugh. Did she really think I was the type to force myself on a woman?
  • What was even more ridiculous was that she insisted on taking the subway to work the very next day! If people found out about this, where would that leave my dignity?
  • I was already somewhat speechless, and when I arrived at the office, my good friend Robert asked me why I didn't go on a honeymoon. He was as crude as ever, plopping himself onto my desk. “Poor Vera, marrying such a boring man like you.”
  • “Robert, you know why I married her.”
  • All I wanted was an accessory, not a real wife.
  • “Of course I know,” Robert said, his lips curling into a dismissive smirk. The smile gradually faded from his face. “But regardless, you're finally settled down. Maybe it's time to let go of the past.”
  • “There's nothing I can't let go of.” I quickly squeezed my hand, then released it. “Once someone's gone, they can't come back.”
  • It seemed like Robert wanted to say more, but he held back. Instead, he asked, “What about that little girl from back then? Any news on her?”
  • “We've got some leads.”
  • “That's something.” Robert laughed again. “I've been wondering how you'd repay her. I initially thought you might offer yourself, but I didn't expect you'd already sold yourself.”
  • I didn't bother responding to Robert's shameless teasing.
  • Robert found himself in an awkward position, his face filled with embarrassment. He glanced at my wheelchair, a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. “Um... Alex, have you told Vera about your leg?” he asked.
  • I had started perusing the financial reports recently submitted by the finance department. But when I heard his question, my hand, which had been scrolling with the mouse, paused momentarily.
  • “No,” I murmured after a moment.
  • Robert furrowed his brows slightly. “Alex, don't take this the wrong way, but regardless of why you married her, you're her husband now. Do you really plan on keeping this a secret forever? Maybe...”
  • At this point, Robert paused but then gritted his teeth and continued. “Maybe you should see if you can accept this new wife of yours. I know if you didn't like her even a little, you wouldn't have considered marrying her and living together. Besides, you can't keep living in the shadow of the past.”
  • “Don't listen to his nonsense, Alex. We need to take revenge, make them pay in blood!” my wolf, Buster, spoke fiercely.
  • “I know.” I brushed my hand over my leg, my mood growing darker. If I could, I wouldn't want to live in hatred either.
