Chapter 5 Wedding Gift

  • Vera's POV
  • Alex was more composed than I had expected; his expression hardly changed. “Yes, I'm already married. It happened just recently.”
  • When he mentioned “recently,” he subtly stretched out the word, his gaze briefly flickering toward me, which sent my heart racing.
  • Before I could react, Jennifer, who was beside me, gasped dramatically.
  • “Mr. Sloan, you're actually married?” Jennifer asked, her voice tinged with disappointment. “That news is going to break the hearts of so many of your female fans.” She couldn't resist her curiosity and asked, “May I ask what your wife is like? Does she come from a prestigious family?”
  • “Jennifer!” I quickly pulled her aside. This question wasn't part of our agreed script, and it was far too personal. It bordered on being inappropriate.
  • What worried me even more was the possibility that Alex might reveal that I was his newlywed wife.
  • Thankfully, Alex didn't do that. He just gave a faint smile.
  • “Enough! Let's not pry too much into Mr. Sloan's personal life,” I said, trying to steer the conversation back on track. “Let's switch gears and focus on some work-related questions.” I didn't want to dwell on the topic of marriage, so I quickly redirected the interview.
  • The next few questions were straightforward, allowing the interview to wrap up at a comfortable pace.
  • “It was a pleasure to be interviewed by your esteemed company,” Alex said as we prepared to leave. He shook hands with everyone politely, but when he shook my hand, there was a brief pause. His blue eyes dropped slightly, noticing the ring on my finger.
  • He noticed—oh my goodness. His observational skills are incredibly sharp!
  • Alex's lips curled up slightly. “That's a beautiful ring.”
  • “Thank you,” I mumbled, my cheeks flushing as I quickly pulled my hand away and hurried out of his office, finally letting my tense nerves relax.
  • Jennifer, still excited, exclaimed, “Oh my God, I just shook hands with the CEO of Morgan Group! I've decided not to wash my hands for a whole week.”
  • I was about to call her a hopeless romantic when I noticed Alex's secretary approaching us, carrying several beautifully crafted boxes.
  • “Our CEO prepared a small token of appreciation for the journalists of Glamour Magazine. Please accept it with our compliments.”
  • As she took the beautifully wrapped box, Jennifer's excitement grew. “Oh my, a gift too? Mr. Sloan is just too thoughtful, isn't he?”
  • She couldn't wait to open the box, revealing a Chanel silk scarf inside.
  • “Wow, no wonder he's the CEO of a big company; he's so generous!” Jennifer exclaimed, “Each of us got a different pattern. Vera, let me see what pattern you got.”
  • I hadn't planned to open mine, but under Jennifer's relentless urging, I reluctantly unsealed the box.
  • The moment I caught a glimpse of what was inside, I quickly shut the box.
  • “Uh, it's nothing,” I stammered, nervously hiding the box behind my back. “It's the same pattern as yours, um... My stomach really hurts. I need to use the restroom.”
  • I practically bolted to the bathroom in sheer panic.
  • Once I was in the stall, I cautiously reopened the exquisite gift box.
  • Unlike the designer scarves Jennifer and the others received, what I found inside my box was a set of keys.
  • Before I could fully process the shock, a text message came in.
  • The message was from Alex, containing an address that led to a villa in the wealthiest neighborhood in Sparaville.
  • An address and a set of keys.
  • It quickly became clear—Alex truly wanted me to move in with him.
