Chapter 7 The Peculiar Alex

  • Vera's POV
  • Even after I closed the bathroom door, my heart continued to race uncontrollably.
  • I could hardly believe what had just happened. My face was flushed with heat, and a hint of fear crept in. Even though I was married to Alex, I hadn't expected to get so close to him so soon. I barely knew him!
  • I had actually considered ending my marriage with Alex once my mother's health improved. I couldn't understand why a billionaire werewolf would need a marriage of convenience. He must have a mate chosen by the Moon Goddess. That person could never be someone as flawed as me. I must have been abandoned by the Moon Goddess—otherwise, why would I still not have a wolf?
  • As that thought crossed my mind, a wave of sadness washed over me.
  • But then, I remembered when I accidentally touched Alex's leg earlier. Given his long-term lack of leg use, I expected muscle atrophy, and a frail appearance. But Alex's legs felt strong and firm, nothing like what one would expect from a disabled person.
  • Knock, knock.
  • Suddenly, a knock at the bathroom door interrupted my thoughts.
  • “Open the door,” came Alex's deep, soothing voice from outside.
  • Open the door? Why did Alex want me to open the door? My heart nearly leaped out of my chest. What was he planning to do?
  • Remembering the intense look in Alex's eyes earlier, I felt my hand tighten on the bathroom counter.
  • A moment later, Alex spoke up again from outside. “You dropped something.”
  • Confused but curious, I hesitated before slowly opening the bathroom door just a crack.
  • Before long, Alex's well-defined hand appeared, holding a soft, pristine white bath towel.
  • Was he really just bringing me a bath towel? Was he not planning to get intimate with me?
  • “Weren't you looking for this when you stepped out?” Alex's voice had a teasing note that made my cheeks burn with embarrassment.
  • “Thank you,” I mumbled, quickly taking the towel from him. I shut the door immediately and locked it firmly. I wasn't going to test his self-control.
  • When I finished cleaning up and changed into my pajamas, Alex was already in bed, wearing deep blue silk nightwear. He was sitting up with a laptop on his lap, typing away rapidly.
  • It was odd. How did he manage to get in bed so easily? Shouldn't there be more people caring for someone with his condition? Why were there only Peter and Anne in the house? And they weren't even personally taking care of him...
  • Questions piled up in my mind, but I kept them to myself. I knew my place.
  • I walked over to my desk to organize things for work the next day when I noticed the ring I had taken off before my bath sitting on the table. I paused for a moment.
  • I had almost forgotten about the pair of wedding rings I bought.
  • When I bought the rings, I had no idea Alex was a billionaire CEO, so I chose the simplest design. But now, I felt that the ring was too plain for someone like Alex.
  • Reflecting on this, I glanced over at him on the bed, noticing that his attention was completely absorbed in his work. Only then did I quietly slip my ring into my bag. I also took the ring I had originally planned to give Alex from my bag and discreetly placed it in the drawer of the dressing table.
  • Once I was done, I finally climbed into bed.
  • I was relieved to find the bed incredibly spacious, with two separate sets of cotton quilts and pillows. Alex was on one side, and I was on the other, with nearly half a meter of space between us. It was great to be wealthy—even the bed was enormous!
  • “Are you done washing up?” Alex asked casually when he saw me lying down, still focused on his screen.
  • “Yes,” I replied, unable to resist a quick, curious glance at Alex's screen.
  • I knew that Alex's company primarily dealt with funds and bonds. The computer screen was filled with red and green icons and lines—a language I didn't understand and frankly couldn't be bothered to decipher.
  • Alex quickly turned off the bedside lamp, plunging the room into darkness. I suddenly felt anxious again.
  • To be honest, I still couldn't fully grasp why Alex had married me. I wasn't sure if he would ever truly play the part of my husband.
  • I lay stiffly in bed as time ticked away. It wasn't until I heard the steady rhythm of Alex's breathing beside me that I finally relaxed. With a sense of security, I drifted off into a deep sleep.
  • The next morning, I was woken up by the alarm on my phone. It was only then that I realized Alex was no longer by my side.
  • I quickly freshened up, applied a touch of makeup, and headed downstairs. As I reached the staircase, the enticing aroma of breakfast filled the air.
  • Anne was busy serving dishes and smiled warmly when she saw me. “Mrs. Sloan, you're awake! Please, come have breakfast.”
  • “Thank you.”
  • Alex was already at the dining table, holding a newspaper in one hand while casually sipping from a cup with the other.
  • To my surprise, he was wearing a plain, simple diamond ring on his slender ring finger.
  • It was the very one I had bought.
  • How did he manage to find the ring and even put it on?
  • I was so shocked that I forgot to sit down. Finally, Alex looked up at me.
  • “What's wrong?” he asked, his gaze drifting over my bare fingers. A hint of curiosity crept into his expression. “Where's your wedding ring?”
  • I suddenly felt embarrassed.
  • Earlier, I thought the ring I bought wasn't suitable for Alex, so I didn't wear it in front of him. But now, he had found the ring and decided to put it on. What was he trying to imply? Didn't he think it was too plain?
  • With no other choice, I reached into my bag to retrieve the ring. As I put it on, I apologized quietly, murmuring, “I'm sorry. I chose the design on a whim.”
  • The corner of Alex's lips curled up slightly. “No worries, it looks good.”
  • At this point, I was at a loss for words, so I simply sat down and started eating my breakfast in silence.
  • After we finished, Alex neatly folded his newspaper and casually suggested, “Let me give you a ride to work.”
  • “No need. I'll just take the subway.”
  • “This place is quite a distance from the subway station,” Alex replied, frowning slightly. “And it's hard to hail a taxi around here.”
  • Indeed, I noticed that when I moved in yesterday. In such affluent neighborhoods, the residents all drove their own cars. Naturally, there wouldn't be any taxis or subway stations nearby, but that wasn't a problem for me!
  • “I can make it to the subway station, so don't worry. I'm leaving now. Goodbye!”
  • Even though I didn't have my own wolf yet, I was still much stronger than an average human. Getting to the subway station in ten minutes was easy.
  • Besides, it seemed like Alex didn't want to make our relationship public either.
  • I considered myself quite thoughtful, but Alex's expression seemed off. I quickly waved goodbye and left, running faster than usual.
