Chapter 8 Welcome Gift

  • Cyrus swept his eyes over Magnus, blatantly sizing the other man up.
  • His brows furrowed slightly at what he saw.
  • Then, he replied casually, "Thanks, but no thanks."
  • Grace was concerned that Cyrus' feelings would get hurt if this conversation dragged on. So, she quickly interjected, "Magnus, I really appreciate your offer. However, my company is currently short-staffed and requires Cyrus' assistance. Besides, Cyrus has the Bosco situation under control. Hence, you needn't worry. Cyrus, let's head to the subway station."
  • Grace took Cyrus' arm and turned to leave.
  • Magnus felt a surge of jealousy and anger crawling out from the cockles of his heart when he saw Grace defending Cyrus so readily.
  • "Grace, my car's parked right here. Why bother walking all the way to the station? Just hop in." Magnus extended his arm to stop Grace as he snarked sardonically, "Grace, what can this guy even do besides guarding the company's entrance? Plus, Bosco is a prominent underworld boss in Rodon. Your decision to let this incompetent fool handle it is simply akin to letting a kid sit for SATs."
  • Magnus opened the door of the Mercedes-Benz. "Let's go. There's no need to stand on ceremony."
  • Grace hesitated, unable to find an appropriate excuse to refuse Magnus' offer.
  • Cyrus walked up to the car and gave it a firm swat.
  • "Hey, are you nuts? This is a Mercedes! Do you know how much you'll owe me for damages? What am I saying? You had to rely on a woman to get you a job." Magnus frowned impatiently. "Tsk, show some class. Then again, you probably think your behavior is acceptable because you're an ex-con. It's no wonder criminals like you can't find your place in proper society!"
  • Cyrus chuckled and remarked, "Is this car second-hand? Judging by the heat, it seems like it's about to catch fire. Grace, let's just take the subway."
  • Cyrus took Grace's hand and swiftly walked away.
  • Magnus sneered in anger, "You worthless son of a b*tch! You're just spouting nonsense because you can't afford such a car yourself! I purchased this car last month! It's worth over 500 grand! How could it possibly catch fire? Grace? Grace, wait up!"
  • Magnus practically leaped into his car and hastily started the engine in an attempt to chase after Grace.
  • Alas, just as he stepped on his accelerator, smoke began to emerge from the front of the car.
  • Nonetheless, he was so blinded by jealousy and anger that he ignored the warning signs and continued to press on the pedal. Unfortunately, the car didn't budge even the slightest. Instead, the front of his Mercedes burst into flames with a loud boom.
  • A terrified Magnus quickly scrambled out of the vehicle.
  • He had barely made it out of that smoking metal box when the front of his car was engulfed in flames. As a result, he could only watch with his jaw agape in horror as the fire burnt his brand-new car into a metal husk.
  • He stood there in shock as his face drained of color, feeling utterly humiliated.
  • Grace stared at the totaled car in disbelief before mechanically turning her head to look at Cyrus. "How did you know his car would catch fire?"
  • "I had a hunch. I picked up some fortune-telling skills from an old fortune-teller during my time in prison." Cyrus shrugged nonchalantly.
  • "Haha! I can't help but wonder what else you have up your sleeves after all this time." Grace chuckled, covering her mouth.
  • Meanwhile, an enraged Magnus pointed at Cyrus as he screeched, "You're a jinx! This is all your fault! Just you wait!"
  • Cyrus paid no attention to the hopping-mad Magnus.
  • Frankly, it wasn't worth his time to deal with someone of Magnus' caliber.
  • Furthermore, the reason the car caught fire was due to Cyrus' smack, which had damaged the engine's circuit.
  • Therefore, it caught fire when Magnus started the car.
  • Cyrus and Grace took the subway to the heart of Rodon's urban area.
  • When they left their stop, a slightly run-down company named Cyrace Cosmetics came into view. It was situated not far away from the station, which allowed the company's staff to commute to the area conveniently.
  • Cyrus felt a sense of warmth when he noticed the name of the company.
  • It was evident that Grace had their relationship in mind when she was establishing her company.
  • She had taken part of their names and fused them together to form Cyrace.
  • Cyrace Cosmetics' office was spacious. However, it only had a small workforce, making the place seem emptier than it already was. Aside from seven security guards, most employees held multiple roles, regardless of their official roles, in research and development, marketing, and public relations departments.
  • Grace led Cyrus to the security department and instructed the team leader, "Declan, Cyrus will be your new subordinate. Please show him the ropes."
  • Declan immediately nodded with a smile. "Sure thing, Miss Lindgren."
  • Grace glanced at Cyrus, feeling a bit embarrassed. So, she walked over and whispered, "Cyrus, I'm very sorry about this. You can start in the security department for now. I will transfer you to a better-suited position once a spot opens up."
  • The morning light illuminated Grace's fair and delicate nose, enhancing her charm and beauty.
  • Cyrus couldn't resist gently pinching Grace's nose as he said gently, "Don't worry about me. This job suits me just fine."
  • Grace flushed a fetching shade of red as she quickly turned and left.
  • Declan made himself comfortable in the security room and started a game of Wild Rift on his phone.
  • A bald man rushed over and whispered, "Declan, bad news."
  • "What's wrong? Is our jungler feeding again?" Declan lazily chewed on some peanuts.
  • The bald man reported, "Declan, I just saw the new security guard pinching Miss Lindgren's nose. That's not all! Miss Lindgren blushed and ran away!"
  • "What?"
  • Declan slammed his phone on the table and grabbed the collar of the bald security guard. "Are you sure you saw that?"
  • "Yes, I swear on my mother's grave that I did!"
  • Declan gritted his teeth as his eyes glinted with a hint of icy ruthlessness. "I, the young master of the Howle family, came here to be the head of security just to get close to Grace. I haven't even made a move. Yet, this new security guard dares to beat me to the punch? He's quite the audacious fellow!"
  • Four other security guards were quick to gather around him when they heard his tirade.
  • Declan had always been generous with his money. So, the other guards were loyal to him.
  • "Let's teach him a lesson, Declan."
  • "That guy actually dares to consider himself your love rival! He's clearly just asking for trouble!"
  • "Plus, he's a genuine security guard. How dare he compete with you?"
  • Declan let out a cold chuckle, waving his hand and saying, "I'll make him regret it later! Baldy, you'll be taking him to the cold storage in a minute. Then…"
  • The group huddled together, secretly discussing their plan to sabotage Cyrus and show the man his place.
  • Cyrus entered the security department, glanced at Declan and the others, and furrowed his brow in distaste.
  • Although the security department was part of the company, it was actually under Declan's control. He's a young master from a prominent family who was known to be generous and adept at winning people over with money. Therefore, the security personnel in the department were more loyal to Declan than to Grace. Naturally, they didn't really follow the company's arrangements.
  • Cyrus, who was the Dragonia Special Forces' captain, immediately realized that there were serious issues in the security department with just a glance!
  • "Ah, Grace truly isn't suited for management! The security department is an integral part of a company. Yet, it's in such disarray."
  • Cyrus shook his head slightly and found a table to sit at.
  • Since he had become a security guard, he needed to consider how to reorganize this department through proper channels.
  • Cyrus suddenly chuckled as he realized what he was planning!
  • He was the mighty captain of the Dragonia Special Forces. He was even notoriously known as the White Reaper on the battlefield!
  • Now, he was seriously considering how to be a good security guard for a little company like this!
  • If the big shots in the world knew about this, they would definitely laugh themselves to an early grave. He would never live this down.
  • Just as his mind was elsewhere, a taciturn man in his 30s walked over and discreetly slid a note to Cyrus before strutting off.
  • Cyrus couldn't help but find his behavior puzzling. Nevertheless, he picked up the note and read it.
  • The note simply said, 'Be very careful when going to the cold storage.'
  • Cyrus tilted his head as he pondered over those words. He quickly understood what it meant. Even so, he simply let out a soft chuckle as he didn't see the point of planning a getaway. Of course, he was grateful that the man had gone out of his way to do a good deed for someone he didn't even know.
  • He was still considering his play when a bald security guard walked over and said with a guffaw, "Cyrus, I've been informed you're our newest recruit. I'll give you a quick tour around the place. First, I have to get something from the cold storage. So, chop, chop!"
  • Cyrus glanced at the security guard, stood up, and said, "Alright, let's go."
  • He was the White Reaper who had dominated the battlefield with an iron fist. So, he naturally did not fear any dirty tricks from civilians.
  • Instead, his inner self curled his lips into a cold smirk as he thought, I initially wanted to find an excuse to clean up the security department. How nice of them to go out of their way to deliver themselves to me on a silver platter as a welcome gift.
