Chapter 5

  • CHAPTER 5 I HAVE TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH
  • Sawyer Mackenzie
  • It was long waiting until finally a doctor came out into the hallway to give me news about Megan.
  • "Mr. Mackenzie!"
  • "Doctor, how's Megan?" I asked anguished, my hands sweating just thinking that she might be wrong.
  • "She's out of danger. She took too many sleeping pills. If we had arrived about fifteen minutes later, she wouldn't be alive."
  • The doctor's words sent shivers down my spine.
  • "Can I talk to her?"
  • "Of course, although it doesn't feel well. The situation is difficult for her, but emotional support is important. What relationship does he have with her?v
  • That last question left me speechless. What was Megan? The brother of his executioner, practically!
  • "I'm just a friend."
  • "A relative must be present, Mr. Mackenzie."
  • "There isn’t anything right now, it's just me," I said sternly. Although the doctor frowned in disagreement, he had known me for years and knew that I was no danger to poor Megan.
  • "Follow me, please."
  • I followed him as he directed and finally arrived at his room. Megan was staring at the window and didn't even flinch in my footsteps. Although his attitude distanced me somewhat, I felt it was my moral duty to move forward.
  • "Megan, how do you feel?"
  • She remained silent, not even shaking her head.
  • "Megan, I'm so sorry I came into your house without your permission, but if I hadn't, the story would be different."
  • She kept looking out the window. I approached slowly, seeking her eyes, careful not to look like a threat. I stared at her and noticed that her eyes were glazing over, about to cry. Her sadness was so evident that she just wanted to comfort her and give her a hug.
  • "It's a nice day, Megan. The sun is warm, but not spicy. I like sunny days, don't you? "
  • Megan blinked rapidly, trying to hold back her tears. I watched as she swallowed the lump in her throat and felt bad for her.
  • "Aren't you going to tell me anything?" Megan, please, it's important that we talk. I turned to face her. Her hand rested on the bed, and I couldn't resist brushing it with my fingers. She clenched her hand and tensed her jaw.
  • "What do you want, Mr. Mackenzie?" She asked in a furious tone of voice.
  • "I told you the first day we met, casually in a hospital: I want to help you, and there are things we need to discuss that are really crucial."
  • "Why did you save my life? How did I get home? Tell me, who's sending it?"
  • I looked at her with compassion. The poor woman was so confused and tense that, instead of intimidating me, she inspired me with an overwhelming desire to embrace and comfort her.
  • "No one sent me, I have to tell you the truth," I sighed with resignation.
  • She turned her gaze to me. Her beautiful blue eyes, crystallized by shock, are fixed on mine with intensity.
  • "Right? Well, sir, I'm attentive. I am on tenterhooks with their unexpected visits. I don't understand what you want. "
  • "Megan, forgive me for what I'm going to tell you, but it's essential that you know. I'm the older brother of Amelie Mackenzie, your husband's mistress."
  • Megan's eyes widened wide, and her cheeks paled instantly. She began to shake her head, unable to utter a single word, as if the power of speech had escaped her.
  • "I know this news is devastating. Amelie is six months pregnant and is madly in love with that wretch. I have tried by all means to make her see that this man does not suit her, but she is obstinate and does not want to be separated from him."
  • Finally, a lone tear rolled down Megan's cheek.
  • "And what do you expect me to do, sir?"
  • "I know that what I am going to ask of you may seem out of place, but you are the only one who can make Mason disappear not only from my sister's life, but also from yours. I can help you!"
  • "You? Of course, for the benefit of that woman. I understand, for your sister I would do anything, but... I can't do anything, sir. Mason has threatened me. If we get divorced, I will lose all my money. If I put him in prison, he will kill my sister or sink me into an asylum. Tell me, how can you help me?"
  • I squeezed my eyes together, trying to take in the magnitude of the situation. Mason was an abominable being, and just thinking about what Megan was telling me made me feel severely nauseous. That guy should go to jail!
  • "I'm going to provide you with all the lawyers you need, security for your sister, whatever it takes.”
  • Megan smiled sarcastically.
  • "And in exchange for what? If that wretch also left me on the street. If you ask me, I don't have a penny in my pocket, Mr. Mackenzie."
  • "All I want is for that man to be away from my sister. That's all I have left."
  • "Who can guarantee that what you are telling me is true? Isn't it a dirty plan by Mason to get me to sign the divorce and keep all the properties?"
  • Megan clearly didn't trust me, and it wasn't surprising. In her situation, she couldn't believe in anyone.
  • "Megan, beyond my word and a contract, I can't offer you anything else. Trust me."
  • "No, Mr. Mackenzie. I beg you to get out of here. I am grateful that he brought me, but I would have preferred to die, so I don't owe him anything."
  • "Megan, please, what's wrong with you? Let me help you, have a little female solidarity. Think that another young woman might end up in your situation," I blurted out impatiently and desperately, trying to persuade her. But this only seemed to stoke her even more.
  • Megan straightened up and looked at me with renewed fury.
  • "She's the one who should get rid of him, not me. I'm not responsible for her messing with a committed man, with a jerk like Mason. Now, if you don't mind, I want you out of this room. Really, sir, I don't want to see him, much less knowing that he's that woman's brother.
  • Her anger was palpable, and although it bothered me that she spoke of my sister like that, I understood why she was so furious. I took a breath and persisted.
  • "Megan, don't think about this now. He decides to sue the cursed Mason. I put everything you need at your disposal. You have my card; Look for me when you need it. My only intention is to help you, and, of course, to help my sister."
  • Suddenly, Megan broke down, and she began to cry heartbreakingly. She pressed her brows together with his fingers, and her chest rose and fell to the rhythm of uncontrollable crying.
  • "He's a damn miserable dog. I gave myself body and soul, I gave everything to myself, including my parents' inheritance, the little that was left to my little sister. He killed my son, my only hope of living. You know? I am a very lonely woman. I'm a professional, and none of that makes sense without everything I've lost. I've lost everything, sir! "
  • Megan was still crying heartbreakingly, as if her heart had become a fountain overflowing through her eyes. Her fragility touched me deeply, and I felt an irresistible urge to embrace her. I swear I wanted to, because maybe that's what she needed: arms and a shoulder to offer her comfort in the midst of so many sorrows that were tearing her soul apart.
  • "Megan, everything can be recovered. You just have to sue him, please trust me.”
  • Megan took the sheet from the bed, wiped away her tears, cleared her throat, and stared at me.
  • "I won't. I will take justice into my own hands, Mr. Mackenzie. And I'll tell you once and for all: I don't care if it means that your sister is harmed. She hurt me too. So please tell her to take care of herself." She looked at me intently. Get out of my room right now.
  • "Please," I insisted.
  • "Get out, Sawyer!" Get out of here!
  • I had no choice but to leave his hospital room a second time. I would not insist any longer; I would find a way to get rid of Mason Briston on my own, without Megan's help. She seemed to be a masochistic woman who enjoyed abuse. How could he refuse my help? I didn't understand what I was thinking.
  • I left the hospital and returned to my office. I poured myself a drink and settled into my large armchair. The image of Megan stuck in my mind, spinning around as if she were the owner of my thoughts. In the midst of everything that was happening, I felt a strange fascination to hold her in my arms, cradle her against my chest, fill her with kisses and show her that someone could love her. It was hasty to say it, but I liked it, it caught my attention, even though it was much younger than me.
  • It was completely creeping into my thoughts, causing an outburst of emotions within me, causing every fiber of my being to churn. Oh, Megan! It's a pity you refused my help. I would be the happiest man in the world if you would allow me, at least, to get close to you.
