Chapter 3
- CHAPTER 3: TREASON
- I swallowed the bitter tears that threatened to flow from my eyes; My life was that cruel. I didn't want to cry, much less show the pain I felt at that moment. I took a deep breath and tried to straighten up in bed. Just then, Mason returned to the room.
- "What did he tell you?" He asked anxiously.
- "Who told me what?"
- "Don't pretend to be unconcerned, Megan. What did the idiot tell you about my boss? "
- I was about to blurt out everything he had told me, complaining about his cunning trap, but something inside me stopped me.
- "He regretted the strange accident I had and offered me the support of his company. Your boss is very good to you, isn't he, Mason?"
- "He's a damn hypocrite. And if you say it wasn't an accident, I swear I'll make you pay, Megan. No one can find out."
- Mason 's eyes grew darker and darker, and his desire to see me suffer became more and more evident. Every word of his caused me deep pain, but he was the only thing I had to survive. We had clauses about our estate, and a divorce right now would leave me on the street.
- "What do you want from me, Mason?" I asked, my voice trembling.
- "Give up all capital, dear wife. I don't want to see you ever again."
- I nodded, but my pride and the losses he had caused me overtime were greater than his desires. So, with my lips pursued together, I refuted his demand.
- "I'm never going to give up my patrimony, I'm going to fight, I'm 25 years old, and you took away from me what my parents left me and my younger sister with so much effort, and for what?" For this? You finished me in every sense of the word Mason, you have no idea how much I hate you.
- Mason wrinkled his forehead, feigning concern.
- "Ask me how much I care if you feel bad, darling. Now ask for the damn voluntary discharge and get out of this hospital. I don't want to go back to this place just to maintain a hypocritical status. My parents are worried about you, so you won't tell them the truth either."
- I shook my head, incredulously and full of helplessness. I was about to tell him that I would give up my capital, but that would only give him the satisfaction he desired.
- "You declared war on me, didn't you?"
- "Megan, I just don't love you. I want you to be far away. You are a stupid person who does not want to give up her heritage. Besides, you love me, little bitch, and without me you can't live, neither you nor your retarded sister.
- "Shut up!" I snapped, furious.
- "It's true, Megan, you're nothing without me."
- "Shut up! Dammit! " I screamed with my heart pounding in my chest, as he mocked my pain as if it were a spectacle. "Go away, I don't want to see you, Mason! Get lost! " I screamed at the top of my lungs. He smiled and walked out of the room, in a wave of cruel and rapacious laughter, as my soul sank into the deep abyss of sadness.
- This time I couldn't resist the tears. My heart wrinkled and tears began to fall into torrents, adding to my pain, not only physically, but emotionally as well.
- Days later, I was discharged. My face was still bruised, and my body was in pain. I returned to the mansion I shared with Mason. Everything was as she remembered it, everything in its place, except Rouse, the poor woman who also feared Mason because of the threats he had made to her.
- I sighed and sat down in one of the chairs in the living room. Who was he trying to fool? Now nothing made sense.
- I picked up my phone and started checking some matters when a message came in from an unknown number.
- “While you suffer the loss of your child, I am enjoying that your husband caresses my belly. We're going to be parents.”
- Attached to the message was a photo of a young woman, approximately my own age, her belly was bulging as a result of pregnancy and Mason was on his knees kissing her abdomen. I felt like I was dying.
- The image was like a stab wound that killed me. Damn traitor! While this did not diminish how abusive he was, it confirmed the kind of obnoxious human being Mason was and the extent of the damage he could cause.
- I got up from my chair and tried to call the number I received the message from, but it sounded muffled. It was obvious! No one was going to answer me.
- I wept so inconsolably that I felt my heart tear deep in my chest, and hundreds of tears ran down my cheeks. I couldn't describe what I was feeling. He wanted to run away, to leave everything, but that would be to please that bastard.
- With deep sadness, I searched the house for some medicine that could ease the pain I felt in my heart, even though I knew there was no medicine for sadness.
- In the past, I have been diagnosed with severe depression and treated with various medications. Although I didn't take them all, I always kept them for times of crisis, and now I was in one of them. I felt so lonely and consumed by loneliness that it was clear that no one could do anything for me. I only wished that the earth would open up under my feet to sink into it and never come out again.
- The little white bottle of sleeping pills was my salvation. As I cried inconsolably, my hands trembling with nerves, I uncovered it and took out more than a dozen pills. My pulse was altered, and tears were pouring down; I just wanted to sleep and never wake up again. So, I put them all in my mouth and, with a sip of water, swallowed some. I put another handful of pills in my mouth and drank water again.
- I lay down on the mansion's large double bed and laid my head on Mason 's pillow, which still retained a hint of his scent. The tears stopped a little and my heart began to beat slowly. It didn't take long for the pills to take effect. I felt an indescribable peace invade my entire being. My eyelids became heavy and, without looking around again, I simply fell asleep... Or dead?
