Chapter 4
- CHAPTER 4 SHE MAKES ME UNEASY
- SAWYER MACKENZIE
- After the embarrassing visit to my esteemed star employee's wife, I was seized by a whirlwind of confusion. That woman was a total enigma and, when I analyzed her in person, the impression she made on me was even greater. She is a simple young woman, the same age as my sister, and, like her, consumed by the illusion of the same man.
- Thinking about that made me angry. I poured myself a glass of liquor and leaned back in my large armchair, when suddenly the door of my office opened to make way for Amelie, my dear younger sister.
- "Why have you frozen my accounts, Sawyer?" Amelie tapped on my desk and her blue eyes locked into mine with a menacing intensity.
- "Because I'm your executor," I replied. "Have you forgotten the conditions imposed by our parents? I can only give you control over your inheritance until you get a professional degree, and, as far as I can see, the only title you'll get will be that of a single mother." I looked her up and down, irritated. At just 22 years old, her bulging belly revealed to her six months of pregnancy, and the father of her child is a stupid employee of my company. She could not have chosen worse.
- "Shut up, you busybody! I need you to unfreeze my accounts. I have needs, expenses and a lot of things to cover, Sawyer."
- "Well, tell your son's father to take charge. Or does that not have the money to do it? Oh, right, I had forgotten: He has a wife!" I exploded, furious.
- "He's about to divorce her. That woman doesn't even reach my ankles. Besides, little brother, she must be wallowing in her sadness because she must already know about my relationship with Mason."
- My sister let out a malevolent laugh, mocking the grief of another woman, one who had just lost her son and had nearly died at the hands of a pathetic and abusive man.
- "What did you do, Amelie?"
- "I said that woman about my relationship with Mason so that she would leave his mansion and leave the way free for us."
- My cheeks turned deep red as I glared at her in anger.
- "Are you building your happiness at the expense of another woman's sadness?"
- "It's not my problem. Why do you defend it so much?"
- "Because she is going through the same thing as our sister, she is being abused by a misogynistic and abusive man. She's not really the one I'm worried about, Amelie. The one who worries me is you! I don't want to lose you, and even less in the hands of that imbecile. The last beating he gave that woman was disgusting, terrible, he almost killed her! Do you want to be the next victim? "
- Amelie clenched her fists, her whitish knuckles looking about to burst with rage.
- "He's not going to do that to me. That woman provokes him, she is the one who makes him beat her and treat her like this, she is a complete witch, a harmful woman."
- "What? Who told you that, Amelie? Are you blind or what? You don't want to see the reality of things. You're in love with a man who is too bad. Sister, please remember what happened to Margaret. You are the only thing I have left."
- I held my sister's hand, trying to get her to reason, but I was definitely in love. He abruptly slipped away from my grip and looked at me with repudiation.
- "Don't get involved in my life, Sawyer. I want you to leave me alone. I'm an adult, and if you don't pay me back my bills, I'll have to talk to my lawyer."
- "Amelie, I order you, it's not a question of whether you want to or not, I order you to stay away from Mason. I'm your older brother and I can't allow you to continue in that situation."
- Amelie looked at me furiously and shook her head.
- "You're crazy! I'm not going to move away from Mason. Never!" Amelie left my office, banging on the door hard as she left. Her departure made me mad; I didn't want to lose her.
- The only way she would get away from Mason would be if he walked away from our lives forever. The only person who could help me was Megan Owen. If she denounced him and managed to get him put in prison, Mason would no longer be with Amelie.
- I put on my coat and walked out of my office straight to his house. She had to listen to me; It was in his hands to prevent the life of another innocent young woman from being in danger.
- "Rigoberto, take me to this address, please," I ordered my driver.
- "Yes, sir, as I ordered."
- Twenty minutes later, I was in front of my employee's large mansion. The house was somewhat peculiar and well above the standards of an average family living on a five-figure salary a month. I didn't want that for my younger sister!
- I got out of the car, cleared my throat and crossed the threshold, ringing the bell at the huge brown door that presided over the entrance.
- I was surprised that no one opened the door, as my private investigator had informed me that Megan was home. I rang the bell again and, again, I got no response. A dark premonition came over me, filling me with nerves. I tried to force the front door, but to no avail. I headed to the back and found that the kitchen door was ajar.
- I went in, looking for Megan.
- "Megan!" Excuse me, I'm Sawyer Mackenzie. Megan! "I called but got no answer."
- Maybe she had gone out and my investigator didn't see her. Moving by curiosity to know how they lived, I began to walk every corner of the house. Every space was cold and seemed desolate, reflecting a deep sadness and loneliness that gave me chills.
- The dust accumulated on the furniture was evidence of obvious abandonment, a palpable sign of depression.
- I climbed the stairs slowly, looking around. The mansion, old and disorderly, showed signs of decay. I opened the door to one of the rooms; It was the guest room, and I saw nothing out of the ordinary. At the end of the hall, there was a room with the door ajar. As I got closer, my heart pounded, as if I sensed I was going to find something terrifying. I hurried and opened the door, being completely petrified to see her small figure spread out on the bed.
- Yes, it was her, poor Megan, who was completely unconscious, not even asleep, or maybe dead? Next to him was his cell phone and a bottle of pills, spilled on the bed, a clear indication that she had tried to end her life.
- "Megan! Megan! What did you do, woman? " I lifted her in my arms. Her face still reflected the purple stains of the blows the savage had given her. I wanted to faint; I would have liked to grab him by the neck and kill him with my own hands, but that creature did not deserve to exist or be named.
- I went down the stairs with her in my arms and found the front door. I went outside and went to the car.
- "Rigoberto, help me, please."
- "Sure, sir. " Rigoberto ran out, opened the back door and helped me place it on the seat. He quickly got into the car and drove off at speed.
- "Take me to the Mercy clinic, to the private medicine part, please."
- "Sure, sir."
- I laid poor Megan's head on my lap. Her perfect features, innocent face, and curvaceous body made me have nefarious and confused thoughts. Megan was 25 years old, and I was 41. I swallowed regretfully for finding a woman her age, so close to my sister Amelie's age, attractive. Although my sister was 22 years old, the difference was not much.
- I shook her head, trying to get her to come to her, but she wouldn't react. What had she done, girl?"
- "Hold on, Megan, please, hold on," I repeated, caressing her soft cheek.
- Her countenance was terrible; Her pale face reflected too much sadness, and I was touched to know that my sister was the cause of that pain.
- A few minutes later, we arrived at the clinic. Rigoberto helped me place her on a stretcher.
- "Help her, please!" It appears that she was intoxicated or tried to take her own life. Help! "
- "Sure, sir," a nurse replied from afar. "Please wait for us here, you cannot enter."
- Megan was led down the dark hallway of the hospital, and I stood outside waiting for some news about her life. Hours passed as she stood there, though she could have perfectly called Mason, she had no way of explaining how she had found her in that state. However, I decided to stay with her until she woke up and we could talk.
- While I waited, I managed to see my sister's messages on her phone. Amelie had a stone heart. The worst part was that she was also at risk of ending up like Megan. That thought shook me.
