Chapter 10 Petty Man
- Finally, the dinner was over amid Chloe’s extreme fear and Yasmin’s obsequious flattery, enabling Chloe to let out a sigh of relief at last.
- Before they left, Ben insisted that Harry sent Chloe home. Of course, this was more than Yasmin could wish for; she thought it couldn’t be better for the young man and woman to have time to get along with each other. However, Chloe resented this; she would rather die comfortably than be together with that stony-faced man! “It really isn’t necessary, Old Master Dixon. I can go back to university on my own. There’s no need to trouble Mr. Dixon since he’s so busy.”
- However, Ben argued and said, “How could we let a girl leave by herself? Harry, send Chloe back to her university; make sure that she arrives safely before you come back!”
- Naturally, Harry couldn’t refuse his grandfather’s orders, so he stepped forward and stood beside Chloe. Seeing how troubled and reluctant she looked, he sneered inwardly. What are you pretending for? You must be delighted deep down inside, he thought to himself. “Let’s go; I’ll send you back to your university.”
- It would be rude to decline the offer again, so Chloe could only accept it. After saying goodbye to Ben, Harry’s father, and the rest, she followed Harry out of the house.
- Meanwhile, Morgan stood quietly behind the crowd with his hands in his trouser pockets. Despite his reserved temperament, his presence was difficult to ignore; his outstanding qualities were hard to overlook even if he was dressed in loungewear.
- On the other hand, Chloe was quite sullen as she sat in Harry’s car. This guy really is a weirdo. It’s fine that he’s cold and aloof, but why is it so cold inside his car as well?! The instant she seated herself in his car, she felt a chilly air getting under her skirt and straight into her heart, making her shiver involuntarily. “Just drop me by the side of the road. I can go back by myself,” she said indifferently.
- Harry shot a glance at her before letting out a snort. He said, “You looked so obedient and polite moments ago; now, you’re showing your true colors once you’re out of my grandpa’s sight.”
- However, Chloe was very tired right now and couldn’t be bothered to argue with this guy. Once someone’s opinion of you has been fixed, whatever explanation you give will be seen as an excuse anyway, she thought to herself. “Just think whatever you want. I want to get out of the car!”
- Harry didn’t want to stay any longer with her either, so he pulled over somewhere right away. “Get out of the car.”
- Chloe opened the car door immediately, but just as she was about to get out of the car, she paused and got back inside. Her actions surprised Harry. “Mr. Dixon, are you unwilling to be engaged to me?”
- Harry didn’t know what sort of tricks Chloe was up to by asking this question, but he had a feeling of being schemed; it made him frown in displeasure.
- Chloe then continued, “Actually, I’d like to say that I don’t want to get engaged to you either. A man like you isn’t quite up to my standard, but it can’t be helped that I’m not in a position to break off the engagement on my own. You’d better talk Old Master Dixon into giving up this idea since this will be good for both of us.”
- With that, she got out of the car and left with ease and natural poise, leaving Harry alone in his car. On the other hand, Harry was furious as he clenched the steering wheel with both hands. What does she mean by the words ‘a man like you’? How dare she turn her nose up at me?! What gives her the right to turn her nose up at me? What gives a dirty, promiscuous woman the right to turn her nose up at me, who stands high above the masses?! Who does she think she is?!
- Like a vicious wolf whose eyes glinted as it lurked in the dark while preparing to pounce on its prey at any time, Harry stared hard at the dainty figure who was walking forward along the roadside with his cold eyes. Then, he started his car up and floored the gas pedal, causing the car engine to roar loudly as the car rushed toward Chloe!
- Just when Chloe heard the grating vroom approaching, she was about to look back and see what was happening when a splash of jet-black dirty water hit her! Harry’s car whizzed past her like a tornado, leaving behind a mess.
- Chloe’s body froze in disbelief, and her round eyes widened as she stared fixedly at her dress and the back of her hand. Her white dress was splashed with dirty stains of jet-black water, and her arm, covered in gray water stains, was still dripping wet.
- “F*ck! F*ck you, Harry Dixon! Screw you!” Chloe bellowed loudly and furiously in the direction of Harry’s car as she exploded into a rage. F*ck you, Harry! You don’t f*cking have the bearings that a gentleman should have! What a petty man!
- Then, she took another look at her own sorry sight right now. The black stains on her white dress made her feel uncomfortable all over, but since she was stranded, she could only brace herself and curse Harry for being a nasty guy while leaving quickly.
- It wasn’t until an hour later that she returned to the university. Since she was utterly exhausted, she just wanted to take a good shower and sleep right now. This weekend really is too exhausting! she thought to herself.
- Life didn’t seem to have changed much for Chloe after the visit to the Dixon Residence. Her life went on the way it should, for she continued to take orders and delivered goods.
- On this day, Chloe finished attending her biology class; she was about to leave hand in hand with Fiona while holding her textbooks in her arms when Alicia Lamarr, her supervisor, stopped her. “Is it about my thesis, Professor?” she asked.
- Industrious and vivacious, Chloe always made a good impression on her lecturers, and she had always been the top student of the biology department.
- Alicia shook her head with a smile and explained, “No, that’s not the case. I’ve already checked your thesis, and it doesn’t have any major issues. It only needs a few revisions here and there.”
- Chloe knew that herself, but she was relieved and delighted to hear Alicia saying that. “Then what’s the matter, Professor?”
- Alicia adjusted her eyeglasses and said, “Well, please come to my office with me, Chloe.”
- Chloe felt that something was weird, but she still nodded and followed Alicia. Why is the professor so secretive today? What is she up to?
- Minutes later, Chloe stood at the center of the spacious office. In front of her was a quaint mahogany coffee table, behind which two men were drinking tea leisurely and elegantly at the moment.
- Chloe frowned as she glanced at the noble and elegant man on the left who was tasting his cup of tea. Why is he here? she thought to herself.
- “Are you Chloe Tillman?” Just then, an old and commanding voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked at the aged man—it was Howard, the chancellor of their university. “Yes, Mr. Pearson.”
- Howard nodded with a smile, making Chloe feel even odder. He then replied, “You’re not too bad. I heard from your supervisor that you’re the top student of your department, so there’s a task I’d like you to complete.”
- Upon hearing this, Chloe couldn’t help but frown in vexation. Why the hell would I be given a task just before my graduation?! Still, she replied, “Feel free to tell me about it, Mr. Pearson.”
- “I think you should know him,” said Mr. Pearson as he looked at the man who was elegantly tasting his tea. He then introduced and said, “This is Morgan Dixon, the Dixon Group’s chief executive officer and the pride of Westside University; he delivered a speech to you all some time ago.”
- Of course I know him! thought Chloe to herself. Not knowing exactly what these two men were up to, she was puzzled and alarmed. Still, she greeted Morgan first and said, “Hi, Morgan!”
- Morgan—who was tasting his tea—paused for a moment. Morgan? This little thing has called me by several names after just a few meetings, he thought to himself. “Hello, Miss Tillman.”
- Hearing his gentle and harmless voice, Chloe curled her lips without looking at him again.
- Just then, Howard spoke. “Well, the university invited Mr. Dixon to tutor some top students of our university, and he happens to be interested in biology. Thus, the university decided to have you tutor him in biology and help him with some daily affairs while you’re at it. Do you think this is fine with you?”
- Chloe was shocked at Howard’s words. Does Mr. Pearson mean that he wants me to be this lunatic’s assistant? “Can I turn this task down, Mr. Pearson?”
