• Hope filled my heart, but it was tinged with suspense as I wondered why Hailey hadn't shown up yet. Perhaps she didn't fully understand what I had explained over the phone yesterday. My mind was preoccupied with possible reasons for her delay.
• Unease grew within me, and I even entertained the thought that Kevin might have bribed Hailey. After all, I had helped foster a good relationship between them, and I hadn't seen him all day.
