Chapter 14 She Needed Money

  • Lu Yao was amused and annoyed.
  • Shao Yunchen was reluctant to marry her back then, even to the point of adding a hundred terms and conditions, but now when she wanted to get a divorce, he was unwilling to. What a difficult guy, she thought.
  • Lu Yao went to the bank for the money the next morning. 2.5 million cash filled two bags to the brim, making them a bit heavy. She handed the money to Mr. Song the lawyer. “Here’s 2.5 million, Mr. Song. It should be enough, right? I’m counting on you for my father’s case.”
  • After checking through the money, Mr. Song breathed a sigh of relief. “This is enough. You managed to return the embezzled money, and that’s the most important part. I’ll defend your father the best I can.”
  • “Thank you.” Lu Yao thanked him, for she didn’t know what else she should say.
  • She had to thank her father for knowing a great lawyer like Mr. Song who was willing to take the case. If it wasn’t for him, Lu Yao would have to go through a lot just to get a lawyer.
  • “Miss Lu, President Ji asks for your presence in his office.”
  • The president’s office called her the moment she came back from the law firm. She quickly put down her stuff before trotting to President Ji’s office, only to find out that the talks of a collaboration was going on.
  • Their company would be having a negotiation with their collaborator—Longteng Group—next Wednesday. However, they had a little problem: the supervisor who would be representing them was hospitalized because of ectopic pregnancy, so they wanted to send Lu Yao there.
  • “Me? You must be pulling my legs, President Ji.” Lu Yao was half-amused. “I’m just an employee in the data department. Asking me to go is just going to be a disaster! I’ve never dealt with this before.”
  • “It’s fine. I’ll get someone to go with you. All you have to do is go with the contract.” President Ji grinned. “I don’t have a choice. If we have someone who’s a better talker than you are, I wouldn’t be in this predicament.”
  • Before Lu Yao could protest, President Ji threw her a carrot. “If you will do this, I’ll get the financial department to reward you with twenty thousand as thanks for your hard work. Also, we’ll sponsor all your travel fees.”
  • He went straight to the money. Charming.
  • But I need it.
  • “In that case, have someone to book a flight ticket for me please, President Ji.” Lu Yao took the contract from President Ji. It’s just a negotiation anyway. Luckily I picked up a few things in my interpretation job earlier. I know a thing or two about business jargon.
  • Twenty thousand was enough to sustain her and her mother for three months.
  • Lu Yao skimmed through the collaboration proposal after she went back to her office. Out of habit, she went on Google to search for Longteng Group.
  • It was an investment firm that started in Jincheng City four years ago, managing to get listed overseas in less than two years. After acquiring the Hetai Group, now the company was worth tens of billions.
  • Lu Yao was taken aback. It grew so much in four years? The boss must be a bigshot or a rich kid.
  • Lu Yao scrolled down to see the boss of the company, but her phone’s ringing interrupted her, so she took the call. “Dongnan? I was just going to call you. Want to have dinner together tonight? It’s my treat. Bring Tiantian too.”
  • Dongnan smiled. “Well, isn’t that a pleasant coincidence. Sure. When will you clock off work? I’ll pick you up.”
  • “Five thirty.”
  • After she sent the message, Lu Yao went back to looking at the blank screen, forgetting what she was going to do. “What was I going to do just now?” she mumbled. “Well, I’m getting old. My memory’s bad now.”
  • Since she couldn’t remember it, Lu Yao didn’t persist. Instead she worked on something else.
  • After Lu Yao got off work, Xiang Dongnan came to pick her up before going to the Red House Restaurant. When they were there, Lu Yao was curious why Tiantian kept playing with her phone without even talking to her father.
  • “Why doesn’t Tiantian speak much?”
  • Xiang Dongnan patted his daughter’s head as a bitter smile surfaced on his face. “Tiantian is autistic…”
