Chapter 10 I’m Not an Outsider
- A young lady was holding her husband’s mother’s arm, chatting happily as they walked toward where she was. When she looked closer, Lu Yao found that she knew that woman, for she was the one beside Shao Yunchen last night.
- Mrs. Shao didn’t expect to meet Lu Yao in the hospital.
- When their gazes met, Mrs. Shao looked awkward, but she still nodded at Mrs. Lu. “I’m down with something.” She smiled. “So Yunchen had Xuezi take me to the hospital. Don’t think too much about it.”
- “I know. She’s Yunchen’s assistant.” Lu Yao smiled as she held her mother’s arm fearlessly. “But mom, you can ask me for help next time. We don’t need any outsiders here.”
- Mrs. Shao smiled in embarrassment.
- The arrogant Fu Xuezi’s face darkened upon hearing Lu Yao mocking her, “Miss Lu, I am President Shao’s assistant. Taking care of his mother is my job, and I am not an outsider.”
- Mrs. Lu was upset to see the mistress being so haughty, so she wanted to defend her daughter.
- Lu Yao stopped her. “President Shao is your boss,” she said calmly. “I am his wife, so you should call me Mrs. Shao, not Miss Lu. With that lack of common sense, I wonder how you became his assistant.”
- Fu Xuezi’s face darkened further.
- Lu Yao only gave her a glance. “Sorry mom,” she said, “but I have something to settle too, so I can’t go back with you. Miss Xuezi can send you back. I’ll be going now.”
- “Of course.” Mrs Shao nodded, but she only gave a curt reply.
- Lu Yao noticed the disdain in Mrs. Shao’s look, but she pretended not to see it as she walked past them with her mother. Even so, she felt dejected from that look.
- She took great care of Yunchen’s family before they got married, going to their home with a lot of gifts every time. Even so, nobody in the Shao family liked her, except for Mrs. Shao, but that was because Lu Yao’s family was rich.
- When Mrs. Shao was staying in the hospital because of her kidney stones, Lu Yao spent a lot of time taking care of her, making all three meals for her until Mrs. Shao was discharged from the hospital.
- But no matter how much she treated Mrs. Shao like she was her own mother, she had never seen her as her daughter-in-law, which exhausted Lu Yao in body and spirit. She was beleaguered, for no matter what she did, Shao Yunchen would never love her.
- When Lu Yao left the hospital, she noticed she was short of two packs of ointment. She asked her mother to wait for her as she went back to retrieve it, but she bumped into Fu Xuezi in the corridor again. This time, Mrs. Shao wasn’t by her side.
- When she saw Lu Yao, Fu Xuezi walked toward her haughtily, her heels clopping against the floor. “We need to talk, Lu Yao,” she commanded her.
- Lu Yao ignored her as she tried to go past her, but when Fu Xuezi continued to block her, Lu Yao stopped. “What do you want to talk about?”
- “I’m Fu Xuezi. If you don’t know who I am, you can look it up,” Fu Xuezi said derisively. “I know your father is fired.”
- Lu Yao smiled mockingly. “The whole city knows about that. You’d be an idiot if you don’t.”
- When she was waiting for Shao Yunchen in the hospital this morning, Lu Yao had already looked up on Fu Xuezi with her phone, and found out that her father was a real estate businessman whose net worth was in the hundreds of millions. In other words, Fu Xuezi was a rich man’s daughter, but someone like her was even willing to be someone’s assistant; Lu Yao didn’t even need to guess the reason for that.
- Fu Xuezi didn’t want to waste too much time with Lu Yao. “I know you need two million,” she cut to the chase. “If you and Shao Yunchen get a divorce, I can give you that amount of money.” She swiftly took out a check from her handbag, scribbling on it before she gave it to Lu Yao as she held it between two fingers
- Lu Yao glanced at the check. Oh, it’s an actual check that’s valid for two million. There’s a seal there. If I agree to it, I can cash it in once I take it to a bank.
- But Lu Yao didn’t take it. “Shao Yunchen and I are getting along well.” She looked at Fu Xuezi. “Why should I divorce him? It’s not like I can’t get two million on my own.”
