Chapter 5 You Are Pregnant
- "I refuse," Hudson said without the slightest hesitation. "Give up on the idea."
- At least, not until Daphne was in prison, he had no intention of divorcing her.
- Daphne let out a bitter laugh. She had expected this.
- To outsiders, it appeared as though she was desperately holding onto this marriage, unwilling to let Hudson go. But the truth was far from that.
- She laughed bitterly again, turning to glance at Marilyn. "Mrs. Parker, you heard him, didn't you? Honestly, I'd love to get a divorce. If possible, please help me persuade him. Thank you."
- After saying that, Daphne wiped the blood and tears off her face and strode away.
- The hallway fell so silent that the sound of a pin dropping could have been heard.
- Hudson stood where he was, staring in the direction she had left, his gaze deep and unfathomable.
- …
- When Daphne left the hospital, snowflakes had begun to fall from the sky.
- Her leg ached again. For three consecutive years, she had knelt all night in the snow, which left her with rheumatism. Rain and snow only made the pain worse.
- Upon returning home, Daphne hastily applied some medicated patches before lying down on the bed.
- She hadn't slept well the previous night, and with the pain in her knees, she quickly drifted off into a deep slumber.
- Late at night, she was jolted awake by searing pain and the stench of alcohol. Opening her eyes, she saw Hudson, his bloodshot eyes glaring, moving violently over her.
- "Daphne, are you satisfied now? Isn't this what you wanted by drugging me? Fine, I'll give it to you!"
- He was clearly drunk, radiating aggression.
- Daphne gritted her teeth and endured it, trying her best not to make a sound.
- Her silence, in Hudson's eyes, became an unspoken form of mockery.
- He leaned down and bit her collarbone hard, his force so brutal it felt like he was about to crush her bones.
- "It hurts!" Daphne finally couldn't suppress her cry.
- "Ha, couldn't hold back anymore, could you? Trying to seduce me now? That's more like you."
- He sneered, grabbing her neck and pinning her to the bed. "Why act so aloof and calm? Didn't you kill Evelyn and marry me for this? Are you satisfied now? Fulfilled?"
- His voice grew more venomous with each word, his gaze brimming with hatred.
- If looks could kill, Daphne was certain she'd already be reduced to a pile of minced flesh under Hudson's glare.
- Fueled by alcohol, he humiliated her over and over with unrelenting rage.
- Images of her earlier indifference as she spoke the word "divorce" replayed in his mind, stoking his fury to new heights.
- "Daphne," he growled, his tone cold and unyielding, "my wife isn't someone who can just decide to leave. Divorce? That's my call. If there's going to be a divorce, it'll happen after you're in prison, not before!"
- Daphne closed her eyes, refusing to look at the face she had once adored. She didn't want to admit that the reckless, vindictive man before her was the same pure-hearted youth she had once loved.
- "If you don't confess, I won't divorce you. We'll just keep torturing each other for the rest of our lives."
- That was the last thing Daphne heard before she slipped into unconsciousness.
- Her hands clutched the bed sheets tightly as a bitter smile played on her lips.
- Torture each other for the rest of our lives? Perhaps I don't entirely mind. But next month, Evelyn will return.
- He would learn the truth, and it would drive an even deeper wedge between them.
- By then, she wouldn't even have the right to share in his torment anymore.
- …
- A night of chaos and ruin.
- When Daphne woke again, it was already the next morning.
- The sunlight poured in glaringly, illuminating her body and the crimson stains on the bed sheets.
- Staring at the blood on the sheets, Daphne suddenly remembered she hadn't had her period in a long time.
- After hesitating for a while, she simply tidied herself up and went to the hospital.
- "You're pregnant," the doctor said. "The bleeding is a sign of a potential miscarriage. You'll need to be more careful from now on."
