Chapter 6 What an Insult

  • Sitting in the gynecologist's clinic at the hospital, Daphne listened to the doctor, her head spinning from nausea. She heard herself saying in a weak voice, "How is this possible..."
  • For three years, Daphne had been consistently taking contraceptives and thought it was impossible for her to get pregnant.
  • The gynecologist smiled. "The test results are correct. Are you sure you were always taking contraceptives? Maybe it was vitamins instead."
  • Daphne froze, suddenly recalling how Jennifer had once hovered suspiciously around the nightstand where she kept her medicine…
  • "Abort it." She raised her head and said seriously to the doctor, "I don't need this child."
  • The past three years with Hudson were the final period she gave herself to indulge in her infatuation with him. Now that Evelyn was about to return, she should sever all ties with this man and return to her own life.
  • The gynecologist sighed, "Your body's quite special. Getting pregnant for you isn't easy. If you abort this child, chances are you won't conceive ever again. Make this decision carefully."
  • Daphne ran her fingers over the test results. After a moment, she stood up and said, "Thank you, Doctor. I'll have the baby."
  • On the way back, Daphne thought about how Hudson had never truly taken her seriously anyway. She could give birth in secret and no one would find out, right? It was worth it to produce a child after three years of marriage.
  • Daphne parked at the villa's entrance. As she got out of the car, she heard Jennifer's anxious voice. "Daph!"
  • The older woman stood awkwardly at the villa's entrance, her face full of remorse as she said, "I'm here to apologize."
  • Daphne pursed her lips and quietly slipped the pregnancy test results into the inner pocket of her handbag.
  • After that, she smiled, walked over, and took Jennifer's hand to lead her inside. "Why apologize? I know you meant well."
  • Jennifer sighed and gently stroked Daphne's face. "You've suffered because of me."
  • Yesterday, not for her pride but for her family's sake, she couldn't admit in front of the Parker family that she had irresponsibly drugged her own son.
  • "Don't worry. I'm fine." Daphne gently got up to make a cup of tea for her mother-in-law. "It doesn't hurt anymore, and my face doesn't look too swollen either."
  • Jennifer sighed. "I know how you feel. Last night, I talked to Hudson for a long time."
  • She raised her eyelids and looked at Daphne. "I asked Hudson to divorce you and let you go. But he refused… Later, his assistant told me he went out drinking last night…"
  • Daphne's hand paused slightly as she stirred the tea. She didn't even notice the tea splashing out and scalding her fingers. So, the reason Hudson went out drinking last night… Was it because of this?
  • Jennifer sighed. "It's clear Hudson's really reluctant to let you go."
  • Daphne smiled bitterly to herself. Hudson didn't want a divorce. What reluctance will he feel? He's probably just upset about failing to avenge Evelyn, isn't he?
  • Jennifer said, "Daph, I think Hudson still has feelings for you. You two should hurry up and have a child."
  • She looked at Daphne with a gaze full of kindness. "With a child, Hudson will settle down, and what happened yesterday won't occur again."
  • Daphne responded with a soft hum and didn't continue the conversation.
  • Jennifer stood up. "Daph, let's go to the hospital. You've been married for three years, and you still have no child. It's either your problem or Hudson's."
  • She grabbed Daphne's hand. "I've booked a full body check-up for you today. Let's see if you're fine first before we have Hudson checked too. Is that okay?"
  • "Forget it, Mom." Daphne pulled her hand away. "I've been taking the pills all this time."
  • "I replaced your pills with vitamins a long time ago!" With a sigh, Jennifer steeled herself and walked over to drag Daphne out the door.
  • Even though she was unwilling, Daphne wasn't strong enough to break free of Jennifer's grip.
  • Soon, Daphne was brought to the hospital by Jennifer. "I'm taking you to Dr. Jensen Hull. He just returned from abroad yesterday and is a medical genius. He can even revive people who have turned into vegetables! I even went through so much effort to book his appointment."
  • Jennifer pushed Daphne into the doctor's consultation room. "Dr. Jensen, please give my daughter-in-law a thorough check-up!"
  • The door to the consultation room was slammed shut.
  • Daphne looked up and helplessly glanced at the young doctor with a distant expression on his face before saying, "Hello."
  • "Hello." Jensen Hull adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. "Your mother-in-law said you've been married for three years and haven't gotten pregnant until now?"
  • "Yes and no." Daphne sat down in front of him and deftly took the pregnancy diagnosis from her handbag, placing it on the table. "I don't need a check-up."
  • Jensen frowned slightly. "Your mother-in-law doesn't know about this?"
  • "I don't want her to know." Daphne took a deep breath. "I want to divorce my husband, and I plan to secretly have this child on my own."
  • After saying this, she pulled out three thousand dollars in cash from her bag and placed it on the table. "I hope you can help me keep this a secret."
  • Jensen leaned back in his chair and sneered. "What an insult."
  • "I'm begging you."
