• One Month later.
• The muffled hum of the city filtered through the open window as Marie stood in her office at the Smith Group. Sunlight streamed in, but its warmth did little to thaw the cold knot of worry tightening in her chest.
• Her gaze flitted over the papers scattered across her desk .. reports, plans, contracts. They were important, yet her mind refused to focus on any of them. Instead, it moved to the delicate engagement ring on her finger, a sign of the choice she had made.
