Chapter 13 A Pitiful Woman

  • “Haha! Sabrina, come quick and see who I've run into!”
  • Upon first sight of the woman, Jayson's handsome features brightened with an even more radiant smile. He quickly gestured for her to come over.
  • Upon hearing this, the woman approached with a face full of curiosity. When she saw Finneas, she covered her red lips in surprise, her eyes filled with an incredulous look.
  • “Finneas, it is actually you!”
  • “Sabrina, it's been ten years since we last met. I hope all has been well with you.”
  • A smile played at the corners of Finneas' mouth.
  • This woman was Sabrina. She was also one of Finneas' classmates.
  • Back in the day, Sabrina was not only the class secretary but also a key member of the student council. She was exquisitely beautiful, making her the dream girl of countless male classmates.
  • However, there was one secret that no one knew about!
  • The secret was that Sabrina once had feelings for him and even pursued him. However, at that time, he was with Natalie, so he naturally turned down Sabrina.
  • Recalling his youthful days, Finneas couldn't help but feel a wave of nostalgia washing over him.
  • “D*mn, where have you been all these years? I couldn't reach you at all. I thought something had happened to you!”
  • Sabrina playfully swung her fair, petite fists and lightly punched Finneas' chest. Her delicate face was brimming with smiles, revealing two shallow dimples that were truly captivating.
  • “Something unexpected happened.”
  • Finneas had a constant smile on her face.
  • Upon hearing that, Sabrina wanted to ask further, but Jayson, who was next to her, shook his head and teased, “Sabrina, stop harping on his shortcomings! Given Finneas' situation, what kind of mishap could there be? Just a moment ago, I was just telling him that I could get him a job! Unfortunately, he isn't interested.”
  • Upon hearing those words, Sabrina was momentarily taken aback. Only then did she take a good look at Finneas.
  • Upon seeing Finneas' melancholic expression and his worn-out clothes, it instantly became clear what was going on.
  • Her watery eyes held a hint of complexity.
  • Back in the day, Finneas was quite the sensation at Jacaster University, widely acknowledged as the campus hunk.
  • His handsome and charming visage had earned him the attention of many teachers. Countless girls were smitten by him, including Sabrina. She had placed Finneas on a pedestal as her ideal man!
  • Back then, she would blush every time she spoke to him!
  • Now, as times had changed, the campus hunk back then had surprisingly become down and out!
  • Although Finneas looked more handsome and charismatic, Sabrina no longer felt anything special in her heart.
  • She was no longer the young girl who was once infatuated with handsome men. After years of grappling in the business world, what she valued more was networking, wealth, and whether it could bring her benefits!
  • In other words, when it came to making friends, she prioritized benefits above all else!
  • Nevertheless, as old classmates, Sabrina did not show any disdain toward him. However, she was not as enthusiastic as before.
  • “Finneas, if you lose your job, you should consider accepting Jayson's help. You know it's not easy to find work these days! There's no need to suffer just for the sake of pride.”
  • “I'll consider it,” Finneas said.
  • Noticing the change in Sabrina, he let out an inward sigh.
  • Some things and some people would truly become part of the past once time had passed.
  • Even if it were possible to return to the past, it was impossible to recapture the feelings from before.
  • “By the way, what brings you two to school today?”
  • Finneas changed the subject.
  • “Isn't the school in the process of selecting outstanding alumni? Professor O'Dorney got in touch with Sabrina and me, asking us to attend as representatives of our class,” Jayson replied with a laugh, the smug satisfaction in his eyes evident.
  • Indeed, this was something to be truly proud of!
  • As one of the top five universities in the country, Jacaster University had cultivated countless talents across various industries. Standing out among such a vast pool of exceptional individuals to become a distinguished alumnus was no easy feat.
  • From this, it was clear that Jayson and Sabrina must have been doing quite well. If they weren't industry leaders, they had assets worth hundreds of millions.
  • “Finneas, Professor O'Dorney is waiting for me and Jayson. We have to go now! We'll catch up if we get the chance in the future.”
  • Sabrina waved her hand, ready to depart.
  • Upon seeing how miserably Finneas was faring, she completely lost any desire to communicate with him.
  • “Right! Professor O'Dorney is still waiting for us! I almost forgot, hahaha...”
  • Jayson gave a slight chuckle.
  • Finneas subtly shook his head as he watched the two of them walking away.
  • If his old classmates still had the same attitude, he wouldn't mind offering them an opportunity!
  • However, if they acted high and mighty, he naturally wouldn't allow himself to be snubbed.
  • At that moment, Finneas' phone rang.
  • The caller was Alyssa.
  • “Finn, I've finished my enrollment process. Let's go grab some food!”
  • Upon hearing Alyssa's gentle voice, a smile tugged at Finneas' lips as he responded, “Great! I'll wait for you guys at the school gate.”
  • Soon, the trio met up at the school's entrance.
  • Upon seeing Finneas, Alyssa and Kelly rushed over eagerly. Each of them clung onto one of Finneas' arm.
  • “Hey! Why are you following Alyssa?”
  • Speechless, Finneas gently pushed Kelly away.
  • The entrance of the campus was bustling with people.
  • Having two beautiful girls clinging onto his arm at the same time was quite a sight that would stir up envy.
  • In that brief moment just then, Finneas had already noticed countless murderous glances.
  • “Mr. Finneas, you're so biased. Why is it that Lyssie can link arms with you, but I can't?”
  • Kelly looked at Finneas resentfully.
  • “Because Lyssie is my sister!” Finneas responded with a serious look on his face.
  • “Then I am your wife... I want to give birth to our children.”
  • What the h*ck? Can we move past this topic already?
  • Finneas couldn't be bothered to engage with the lively and unrestrained Kelly. Instead, he shifted his attention to Alyssa and asked, “Did your enrolment process go smoothly?”
  • “Yes! My administrator was really kind. Seeing my difficult circumstances, they even offered to help me apply for a study grant for disadvantaged students!” Alyssa replied obediently.
  • “That's good to hear! But there's no need for the poverty assistance, I'm capable of earning money. Let's leave it for those who are in need.”
  • Finneas affectionately tousled his little sister's hair.
  • “All right!”
  • Alyssa nodded with a smile.
  • “Goodness... you are just the best, Mr. Finneas! So many people wish they can have the study grant for disadvantaged students.”
  • At that moment, with a playful smile, Kelly seized the opportunity to link her arm through Finneas'.
  • Exasperated, Finneas could only roll his eyes. He was truly at a loss with Kelly, but he had no choice but to let her do as she pleased.
  • During the time when the trio was chatting and laughing, Finneas was completely oblivious to what was happening across the street.
  • A woman roughly in her thirties was clad in a white dress. Her face looked slightly sickly, but she had extremely delicate and attractive features. She was holding the hand of a little girl and staring blankly at the scene before her.
  • “Mom... Mom, what... what's wrong?” the little girl asked softly.
  • The little girl was around five or six years old. She wore a worn-out princess dress and had her hair styled in two pigtails. Her skin was tender and fairer than snow, and her features were exquisitely sculpted.
  • Her large eyes were framed by thick, long, and curled lashes, made her look just like a doll.
  • However, as she spoke, her facial expression appeared rather awkward. Even the words she uttered were indistinct.
  • Her name was Rosemary, which meant an unforgettable love.
  • “Nothing, I was just pondering what to cook for you tonight, Rosie!” Natalie forced a smile as she replied.
  • She was holding a shopping bag with one hand and cradling the little girl with another. Then, she turned around and walked off into the distance.
  • As she turned away, silent tears streamed down her face.
  • She gently rested her chin on her daughter's shoulder as tears streamed relentlessly down her face.
  • For so many years, she had disregarded her parents' advice and traveled all the way from Yiefmery with her daughter to Jacaster just to search for the man who was deeply etched in her memory.
  • Everyone was saying that Finneas had disappeared or encountered an accident, but she wouldn't give up searching for him as long as she hadn't seen his body!
  • She didn't think that she would finally see him that day!
  • At that moment, her hopeful heart was completely shattered!
  • Finneas! So you aren't missing after all! You aren't dead after all! And it turns out that you've always only fancied eighteen-year-old girls...
  • At that moment, Natalie felt utterly disheartened and completely gave up. All she wished for was to leave this city immediately and return to her hometown.
  • As if sensing something, Finneas furrowed his brows.
  • He lifted his gaze and in the distance, he saw a gaunt woman holding a little girl as they disappeared around the corner.
  • “Finn, what's wrong?” Alyssa noticed Finneas' gaze and asked.
  • “It's nothing! That woman holding the child was really odd. I heard her crying. Even though it was faint, I could still sense the despair and sorrow in her heart.”
  • Finneas shook his head.
  • “I bet it's another unfortunate woman!” Alyssa responded.
  • At that moment, Kelly remarked with a tone of deep sympathy, “That woman is quite attractive. I have taken special notice of her a few times. She is truly pitiful. Her daughter suffers from an extremely rare disease called Kabuki syndrome. This disease is characterized by stunted growth and innate intellectual deficiencies. The patients usually don't live past twenty! There aren't any effective treatments available at the moment.”
  • “What? That's just too pitiful.”
  • Alyssa covered her mouth.
  • Finneas, on the other hand, appeared much more composed.
  • In this world, there were far too many unfortunate souls. Who could possibly manage to care for them all?
  • Without giving it much thought, he said, “It's getting late. Let's go grab some food first!”
