• Veronica was incredibly excited about me being chosen by the King. For once, there was a rare smile on her usually cold face. She enthusiastically directed the servants to put my things in the car and then watched as I left for the palace.
• “Emilia, I always knew you were a smart and beautiful girl,” Veronica said through the car window. “It’s no surprise to me that the King noticed you.” She awkwardly tried to make a friendly expression, but to me, it felt very fake.
