Chapter 2 She Cheated On Her Newly Wedded Husband
- The hospital director spoke. "This is Wisteria Cash, the doctor on duty last night."
- Xavier came in and darted a look at Wisteria's name tag, saying, "Please come with me."
- Wisteria was dumbfounded. "Huh? Where are we—"
- "Just shut up and go with us." The hospital director took her by the hand without allowing her to ask any further questions. "Don't keep Mr. Baker waiting."
- Soon, Wisteria was brought to the hospital director's office.
- Sinking back into the sofa, Henry looked tall and slender, though one would never notice the paleness of his thin lips without looking closely. The smell of disinfectants in the hospital concealed the faint smell of blood on him. Dressed in a pure black suit, he evoked a sense of terror in those who saw him with just a single look, while the sternness of his features lent him a formidable air that gave the impression of someone who'd been toughened by life's ups and downs.
- Going around behind him, Xavier leaned over and whispered, "All surveillance footage of the night before has been destroyed, perhaps intentionally by those who tried to kill you to avoid leaving any evidence behind. This lady here is Wisteria Cash, the doctor on duty last night. The hospital director confirmed that she was on duty, and she did work the night shift yesterday according to the roster that I checked just now."
- Henry raised his eyes.
- Wisteria let out a gasp. Isn't this guy the Dragondale Group's president?
- Henry eyed her with a hint of scrutiny. "Were you the one who helped me last night?"
- Not daring to meet the man's gaze, Wisteria lowered her eyes immediately. "Y-Yes, it was me." She didn't know what had actually happened last night, but she knew it'd only be good for her if she managed to strike up a relationship with him. As it happened, now was the critical moment for her to secure an internship at the Northshore General Hospital, which was much better than here in terms of resources. If she managed to get his help, the internship at the Northshore General Hospital would be in the bag for her!
- Henry's expression was indifferent, but his stony features betrayed a hint of tenderness when he recalled what had happened last night. "What would you like from me? I can give you anything—including marriage."
- Wisteria was so overwhelmed by the sudden stroke of luck that she didn't know what to say. "Um… I…"
- "You may come to me when you've made up your mind." Henry stood up and ordered Xavier to give her his contact information.
- The hospital director personally saw him to the door. "Let me see you off, Mr. Baker."
- "It's okay. I'll walk myself out." Henry's expression was indifferent again as usual, but he paused for a moment as though he had recalled something. "Please look after her while she's at the hospital."
- "Don't worry. I will," the hospital director replied with a smile.
- After making sure that no one would hear them, Xavier whispered to Henry, "Mr. Baker, you're already married. I'm afraid…" I'm afraid you can't promise Miss Cash marriage, he thought.
- Henry's expression gradually darkened when he thought of the woman whom he was forced to marry. Then, his lips curled into a chilling sneer. "They just signed their own death warrant."
- Xavier shuddered, not knowing whether his boss was referring to the woman who married him or the person who brought about this in the first place.
- …
- Meanwhile, Samantha returned to the villa where her newly wedded husband stayed. As soon as she entered the house, Wilma Gonzales walked up to her, asking, "Madam, why were you away last night?"
- "I had to work a last-minute shift," Samantha replied in a low voice while looking weary with bloodshot eyes.
- Seeing that she seemed very tired, Wilma didn't ask her anything else.
- Samantha went upstairs and soaked herself in the bathtub. When she recalled what had happened last night, her cheeks burned uncontrollably. She buried her head in her arms.
- In reality, her feelings were kind of mixed deep down. After all, she had just lost her virginity to a man she knew nothing about. Moreover, she… was a married woman. She seemed to have cheated on Henry, her newly wedded husband!
- After taking a bath, she got dressed and went out again.
- Seeing that she was going out again, Wilma came over, asking, "Madam, are you going out again? Aren't you gonna have breakfast?"
- Samantha checked the time before saying, "I'll be late for work if I do."
- Wilma had heard before that Samantha was a doctor, so she knew what the latter's job was like. And besides, being a doctor was a profession worthy of respect, so she fetched a glass of milk for the latter, saying, "In that case, please drink this before you leave. It's still warm."
- Samantha looked at Wilma, whose care for her gave her a feeling of warmth. Lowering her eyes, she said softly, "Thank you."
- "Oh, don't mention it." Wilma smiled; her round face made her seem all the more affable.
- After Samantha finished the glass of milk, Wilma took the glass from her.
- Samantha then stepped out of the villa, but she didn't go to work at the hospital right away. She came out so early in the morning because she wanted to go to the inpatient department, where Yvonne Salinger, her mother, was placed under intensive care.
- After entering her mother's ward, Samantha checked the former's condition, which was still as bad as before. Her heart sank involuntarily.
- Her mother was suffering from end-stage heart failure and had to receive a heart transplant in order to survive. However, the cost of surgery for a heart transplant would be astronomical. She only agreed to marry into the Bakers at her father's request because the latter had threatened her, saying that he wouldn't pay for her mother's surgery if she didn't agree to it. At the moment, her mother would be cured as long as there was a suitable heart.
- Looking at her mother, Samantha whispered in a strained voice, "Mom, I'll cure you." You're the dearest person to me on earth, she thought.
- Beep… The phone in her pocket rang.
- A voice came from the other end of the line. "Samantha, do me a favor."
