• A few days later Jacks was standing in front of the full-length mirror, making his third tie adjustment. He wanted tonight to go flawlessly. He felt he had to atone to Charlotte after what had been a tornado of stress and peril. Tonight was to allay her fears and demonstrate to her how much he valued her.
• Jacks discovered Charlotte in the living room waiting when he came out of the bedroom. His breath seized in his throat. She wore an exquisite emerald-green gown that sank to the floor and embraced her contours. A couple of free tendrils framed her face as her hair was twisted elegantly up. He was briefly hard-pressed to think she was real because she appeared like a vision.
