Chapter 3 The Discomfort After Divorce

  • After saying that, she just walked off.
  • Mike watched her go, feeling a bit uneasy when he heard his phone ping. There was something off about Charlotte, but he could not quite put his finger on it.
  • It was like she was trying to break out of a cage.
  • He used to think he had Charlotte all figured out. He thought she was this two-faced woman, one persona before marriage, another after, and he hated that about her.
  • However, things seemed different now.
  • Mike furrowed his brows, trying to shake off the odd feeling in his chest.
  • Never mind, that's not the priority. Right now, we need to find someone else to do Lanie's drug trial.
  • We can't afford to delay her treatment.
  • He drove to the top-tier private hospital and headed straight to Lanie's VIP ward.
  • The place looked more like a cozy hotel suite than a hospital ward.
  • When Lanie saw Mike coming, a soft smile lit up her face. "Hey, Mike, you made it."
  • Glancing past him, she asked, puzzled, "Where's Charlotte? Did you two have another fight?
  • "Sorry, it's all my fault. If Charlotte didn't have to do the drug trial for me, you two wouldn't have argued," she apologized, though secretly feeling pleased.
  • Soon, Mike would ditch that awful Charlotte, and she would slide right into the role of Mrs. Warner.
  • Just as Mike was about to reply, his attention was drawn to the television.
  • A slideshow of photos was playing, labeled 'Photos sent by Lanie.'
  • Lanie's expression soured as she caught sight of the images.
  • Mike was taken aback and confused by the pictures. What's happening?
  • It was originally a group photo taken after a banquet, showing Lanie and him with a bunch of friends .
  • There were five or six others in the frame as well.
  • Furthermore, it was not Lanie he was focusing on in the photo, but a dog being led by one of their friends.
  • Lanie hurriedly reached for the remote to switch off the television, but it would not respond. "What ... What's happening
  • "Mike, who could be so evil to send these photos of us?"
  • Before she could finish, words began to appear on the screen, one by one.
  • Lanie Smith, you're a real home-wrecker. I hope one day you'll successfully become Mrs. Warner so no one will call you Ms. Smith anymore.'
  • Mike's heart felt uneasy, his expression weighed down by a mix of emotions.
  • Turning to face Lanie's pale visage, he felt a surge of confusion.
  • Lanie, in a panic, tried to explain, "Mike, could it be that Charlotte has another misunderstanding?"
  • She rushed to reassure him, "I can clarify everything to her
  • "If she refuses to listen, I'll keep my distance from you. I swear I won't let Charlotte get the wrong idea again."
  • Why are these photos showing up now?
  • And why isn't Charlotte grilling Mike about them like she usually does?
  • Something doesn't add up.
  • Mike's frown deepened as he sensed that there was more to the situation.
  • Meanwhile, Lanie broke down in tears, appearing vulnerable and helpless. "It's all my fault.
  • "If Eric and I hadn't been in that car accident, Charlotte wouldn't have to do the trial for me, and it wouldn't have caused problems between you two. I don't want Charlotte to do the trial for me anymore."
  • At the mention of his good friend Eric Hanson, Mike's frown softened and his demeanor became less stern.
  • Could Charlotte have requested a divorce just because of these few photos, misunderstanding my relationship with Lanie?
  • Mike could not understand why Charlotte would make such a big deal out of a trivial photo.
  • Anyone with a bit of common sense could see the problem with those pictures.
  • "Let's forget about this," he said, reaching for the remote and turning off the television.
  • However, Lanie sensed that he was not really letting it go. So, she clutched her chest uneasily. "Mike, I don't feel well. Can you call a doctor?"
  • Just then, a mouse darted onto Lanie's bed and scurried toward her.
