Chapter 2 Doing Drug Trials for Her Despite Their Divorce
- Mike's reaction was immediate and heated. "Charlotte, what are you trying to do now?
- "You know perfectly well about Lanie's critical condition and the importance of her treatment ... "
- Charlotte, though feeling the intense pain in her heart, interrupted him firmly. "I'm not looking for trouble."
- Her voice remained remarkably composed as she laid out her ultimatum. "Mike, I'll give you two options: we divorce at the Civil Affairs Bureau within the hour, or I take legal action against you.
- "If you refuse, I'll reveal everything you've done for your mistress, and I'm confident both your family and Lanie will face the consequences they deserve."
- With that, she ended the call.
- "Charlotte, you did the right thing!" Ben praised her, giving a thumbs-up, his eyes brimming with cold determination. "You should just leave a man like Mike to Lanie.
- "And just so you know, I'll assist you in packing your things at the Warner Residence. I'll ensure Mike and Lanie don't bother you anymore."
- Charlotte managed to hold back her tears as she expressed her gratitude, "Ben, thank you for being here for me."
- Ben's response was gentle yet firm, "I'll always be here for you."
- With that, he silently vowed to support Charlotte for as long as she needed him.
- ...
- Outside the Civil Affairs Bureau.
- Charlotte sat on the flower terrace, her heart heavy with pain and sorrow as she waited for Mike to arrive.
- Despite her phone ringing persistently, she paid it no mind, knowing it was likely Mike trying to reach her.
- After what seemed like an eternity, the ringing ceased, and about thirty minutes later, Mike finally appeared before her, his demeanor icy and impatient.
- "I granted you the title of Mrs. Warner because you wanted it, and I provided you with money when you asked for it. What more do you want?" he demanded.
- Charlotte lifted her head slowly, meeting his cold gaze with indifference. "Divorce," she replied, her true desires far from what Mike assumed and impossible for him to fulfill.
- She studied the man before her, taking in his sharp features, strong brows, and a prominent nose that lent him an air of handsomeness, yet he had never shown her any kindness.
- A hint of surprise flashed in Mike's eyes. Charlotte used to regard him with care and adoration, never daring to provoke him. Now, however, she seemed calm and detached.
- Becoming increasingly impatient, Mike furrowed his brow. "Do you not understand the seriousness of the situation? That's fine if you don't. Many others are eager to participate in Lanie's drug trials. However, if you wait until you regret it, this lucrative opportunity will have passed."
- Charlotte offered a bitter smile. "My greatest regret is risking everything to marry you."
- Enduring both physical injuries and a shattered heart in her pursuit of Mike, Charlotte braced herself for what was to come.
- Mike's anger surged, evident in his repeated utterance of "fine" as he dragged her into the Civil Affairs Bureau.
- In less than two minutes, their two-year marriage ended.
- Charlotte stared at the divorce certificate in her hand, feeling a pang of pain in her heart. "Congratulations, Mr. Warner," she remarked bitterly, "you've finally obtained the divorce you've been longing for."
- Mike's sneer was barely concealed as he spoke. "Very well, it's time for you to accompany me to the hospital for the drug trial."
- Charlotte could not help but laugh, though it was tinged with sadness and pain.
- "Mike, are you out of your mind? We're divorced now, yet you still expect me to participate in Lanie's drug trial? Dream on!"
- Mike's gaze turned icy and resolute as he reminded her, "Charlotte, this was one of the terms you agreed to from the start!"
- Those words struck Charlotte like a blow to the chest, shattering her already broken heart into a million pieces.
- She convulsed in agony, realizing that in her desperation to marry Mike, she had foolishly consented to his terms in the past, agreeing to participate in drug trials for Lanie whenever and wherever he demanded.
- Tears brimmed in her eyes as she looked at Mike, but his cold stare swiftly dried them up.
- From the very beginning of their marriage, she had understood she was nothing more than an experiment to him.
- "That was a condition for our marriage. But now that we're divorced, it's no longer valid!"
- She pushed aside her vulnerability and asserted herself. Then, she transferred all her funds to Mike through her phone. "I'll return all the money you gave me, and I have a significant gift for Lanie too!"
