Chapter 4 A Heavy Burden Has Been Lifted
- “Am I really not dreaming?” Ruan Shishi muttered to herself as she lay on her bed while holding her marriage certificate over her head.
- Her mind was in a state of utter confusion when she suddenly recalled the last sentence that Yu Yimo said to her in the car.
- He said that he could give her everything, except his love.
- Upon further thought, she realized that it was the same for her.
- She had lost all her hopes of romance from the humiliating betrayal she went through two years ago.
- Because of that incident, she even felt that she probably wouldn’t fall in love with somebody else again for the rest of her life. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have gone for the blind date.
- Blind dates were meant to have people put their requirements on the table, not because they have feelings for each other.
- Marriage was but a show for the outsiders to prove that one was living a so-called ‘normal life’.
- Ruan Shishi felt like a heavy burden had been lifted off her shoulders when the thought occurred to her.
- Her registering her marriage to Yu Yimo was the most unexpected thing out of all surprises, but the nature of her marriage was consistent with what she had planned—to marry not for the sake of love, but to simply spend their lives in each other’s company.
- So, she had nothing to worry about.
- After comforting herself for a while, Ruan Shishi pulled her blanket over her head and fell asleep.
- It was already past 5 p.m. when she woke up. The evening sun hung low in the sky while casting its glow upon the head of Ruan Shishi’s bed.
- Ruan Shishi rubbed her eyes as she was still feeling drowsy from her sleep.
- While she was still pondering in a daze about continuing to sleep for a little longer, her mom’s fervent voice could be heard from outside the door, causing her to shudder. “Mr. Yu, right? Come in, have some water and an apple. It is fresh; I bought it at the food market this morning.”
- Mr. Yu? Have some water? Have an apple? Is my home having a visitor?
- Ruan Shishi scratched her head, but it took her a brief moment to recall suddenly that Yu Yimo said he would visit her home.
- Could this Mr. Yu be Yu Yimo?!
- Ruan Shishi dashed out of the room at the speed of a rocket. As soon as she was out of her room, she ran into Madam Liu, who was about to knock on her door while holding a fruit platter.
- Madam Liu shot her impetuous daughter a dirty look before putting on a kind and loving smile in the blink of an eye. She said in a voice that was neither loud nor soft, “Shishi, you have come out at the perfect moment. Mr. Yu is here; hurry and have a chat with him.”
- Ruan Shishi’s heart skipped a beat upon hearing her mother’s words. She looked subconsciously at the clock on the wall and saw that it was exactly 6 p.m.
- He had actually come! Besides, he was quite punctual.
- Ruan Shishi gave an awkward smile as she attempted to retreat into her room. But Madam Liu, with her sharp eyes and deft movements, immediately grabbed Ruan Shishi by her arm and dragged her to the front of Yu Yimo, who was sitting on the sofa in the living room.
- “Have a chat while I cook the dishes,” said Madam Liu with a smile before she immediately left the scene.
- The air in the living room froze in an instant.
- Ruan Shishi stood in her place; she was at a loss for what to do. She even had no idea where she should look, so she alternated her gaze between her feet and Yu Yimo.
- Yu Yimo was wearing an off-white sports jacket. He looked steady and upbeat, much more amicable than when he was wearing a suit with a tie during the day.
- Did he expressly go back to change his clothes? Ruan Shishi’s mind began wandering again.
- “Shishi.” Yu Yimo opened his mouth and broke the silence between them.
- Ruan Shishi subconsciously raised her head and answered unwittingly, “President Yu.”
- As soon as she spoke, she realized that she had made a mistake, for she hadn’t told Yu Yimo that she was an employee of Yu Family Group.
- Now that she had exposed her identity, would he think that she was a scheming woman? Would he suspect her of orchestrating the blind date on this day?
- Countless imagined scenarios flashed across her mind in an instant.
- Much to her surprise, Yu Yimo didn’t care about what she said. He continued, “Give me your hand.”
- Ruan Shishi extended her right hand to him obsequiously.
- “Your left hand, please,” said Yu Yimo.
- Ruan Shishi retracted her right hand and extended her left hand obediently.
- Then, Yu Yimo took out a platinum ring and placed it on the ring finger of Ruan Shishi’s left hand.
- He did it smoothly in a gentle and elegant manner.
- Ruan Shishi, though, was dumbstruck; her heart was thumping wildly as she stared at the ring on her ring finger, unable to speak.
- When she looked at Yu Yimo, she found that Yu Yimo had a ring on his left ring finger that looked exactly like hers, only that his ring looked especially dazzling on his long and glabrous finger.
- “The size is just right.” Yu Yimo nodded in satisfaction at his choice of the ring.
- “I…” Ruan Shishi’s heart was sent into turbulence once again.
- “I have told you that I’ll give you everything.” Yu Yimo raised his eyes to look at Ruan Shishi as he said, “Call me Yimo from now on. I’ll call you Shishi.”
- His voice was very soft, but his words had an unquestionable finality about them.
- “I…” Ruan Shishi tried to calm herself down as she asked, “Aren’t we going too fast? We have met each other just once, so you don’t seem to know me very well yet, don’t you?”
- She blushed as she finally let out what she had wanted to say.
- To be honest, she had no scruples about marrying Yi Yimo since she wouldn’t suffer any loss by doing so, but it would be a big loss for him.
- In fact, being Madam Yu was an immense fortune for her, as this title carried more value than ten trucks full of diamonds.
- “What did you mean by knowing you?” Yu Yimo raised his eyebrows slightly.
- Ruan Shishi pressed her lips together at his question before she gave a few examples. “For instance, what is my name, where do I work, and which university have I graduated from…”
- “You are Ruan Shishi. You are 24 years old and graduated with a degree in Administrative Science from Jiangzhou University. You are now working at the Yu Family Group. You had a boyfriend who studied finance while you were studying at the university, but you broke up with him when you graduated…”
- “Alright, that’s enough.” Ruan Shishi immediately cut Yu Yimo off upon hearing his words.
- She instantly blushed with embarrassment at the mention of her past relationship, whereas Yu Yimo looked perfectly calm as he answered her question earnestly.
- She gulped as she thought that Yu Yimo seemed to know her quite well.
- But since the topic of conversation had come to this, would he be interested in her past relationships? Would he have misunderstandings about her?
- After further consideration, Ruan Shishi finally decided to explain a little to Yu Yimo. She mumbled her words softly, “The relationship that I had with my ex while at university was a platonic one. I had held his hands just twice.” With that, she blushed up to her ears.
- Yu Yimo didn’t care about this matter at first, but when he saw Ruan Shishi talking about it so solemnly, he couldn’t help feeling that the girl in front of him was cute. Upon feeling so, the cold look in his eyes faded a little.
