• "Yrene?" Fran asked as if she needed glasses and wasn't seeing me well enough. I straightened up on my knees, my grip on the scrubbing pad going loose.
• My belly was already in knots, and my heart was getting squeezed tighter by the second. I heard the sound of blood pumping in my ears, and suddenly felt a strange weakness in my limbs that I knew had nothing to with all the work I had done.
