- The thought ran through my head for the hundredth time as I pushed open the door to La Verona, the café I’d stupidly chosen for this disaster of a meeting. The little bell above the entrance chimed, and the familiar scent of espresso and freshly baked pastries filled the air. Normally, it would have been comforting. Today, it just made my stomach turn.
