Chapter 3 The Abandoned Son-In-Law

  • All eyes turned following the voice, and a glint of light appeared in their eyes.
  • Blessed with a beautiful face and an hourglass figure, a perfectly dressed woman walked through the crowd, bringing a gust of blooming peony scent, radiating a dazzling brilliance.
  • Sandra Williams. A classic beauty.
  • Following Sandra was her younger brother, Austin. Austin cast a glance at Lucas and observed his untidy appearance, noting his apparently injured finger, which surprised him.
  • I might have presumed that Lucas was harassing Wallace again. Nonetheless, it seems now that Lucas was probably victimized instead.
  • Seeing Sandra's arrival, Lucas couldn't help but avoid her gaze. It was no secret that Wallace was a fool, and the Williams family often mocked and humiliated this foolish son-in-law.
  • However, no one dared to humiliate Wallace in front of Sandra. After all, they were husband and wife on paper.
  • Furthermore, Sandra had always defended Wallace. Today was no exception. She directly shielded Wallace behind her and never interrogated him about anything. After six years, no one understood Wallace better than her. Even if she asked, Wallace wouldn't be able to explain. She now realized that Lucas had bullied Wallace again at the expense of her absence.
  • Lucas felt a pang of guilt. He secretly looked toward Zachary, seeking help with his eyes.
  • Zachary smiled and said, "Miss Williams, we meet again."
  • Sandra nodded gently.
  • "Lucas, what's going on here?" Austin couldn't help but ask.
  • Lucas shot a fierce glare at Wallace. "This fool broke my finger when I wasn't paying attention."
  • Lucas wanted to raise his injured hand, but the intense pain made him gasp for breath with even the slightest movement.
  • Upon hearing this, even Sandra looked at Wallace in surprise. For six years, Wallace never fought or talked back. Did he break Lucas' finger?
  • Looking at Wallace smiling, Sandra came to her senses. Her eyebrows furrowed, and she said coldly, "He's your cousin-in-law. Why can't you talk things out?"
  • In her heart, she was still in awe that Wallace would do such a thing.
  • Lucas choked.
  • Given the circumstances, Zachary remarked, "Miss Williams, Wallace is already fine. Maybe he wasn't stupid at all. He just pretended to be crazy to deceive you." He didn't say much. After all, he was the eldest son of the Sandler family, and it wouldn't be appropriate for him to behave too recklessly in public.
  • "He is my husband, and I brought him into the Williams family myself. Why would he deceive me? Mr. Sandler, this is a family matter of the Williams family, nonetheless. This has nothing to do with you. As for Lucas, have you forgotten what I told you?" Sandra replied without thinking, still firmly protecting Wallace behind her.
  • Zachary frowned and calmly stated, "Miss Williams, I don't have to lie to you."
  • "Yes, Sandra. Wallace has fully recovered now. He's just pretending to be stupid. I suspect he just wants to freeload off the Williams family!" Lucas couldn't help but add.
  • Seeing Zachary and Lucas looking serious, Sandra frowned. She turned to look at Wallace. "Wallace... is this true?"
  • "I'm hungry, and I want meat." Wallace sneered internally but put on a confused front, just like a complete fool.
  • Pfft!
  • Zachary and Lucas were on the verge of an explosion at this scene. Lucas was so angry that he trembled all over. He pointed at Wallace angrily. "Y-You scoundrel, are you still pretending?"
  • "Enough!" Sandra cut Lucas off without hesitation. She took Wallace's hand and quickly walked away.
  • There were way too many guests at her birthday banquet. It would only bring disgrace to the Williams family if they continued causing a scene here. Countless pairs of eyes were on Sandra and Wallace, each with a different expression. A fleeting shadow passed through Lucas' eyes.
  • I would not let what happened today slide so easily!
  • As the crowd slowly dispersed, an old man in a green shirt in the vicinity paused for a moment, then swiftly exited the banquet hall.
  • Sandra held Wallace's hand and led him to the small banquet hall next door, where their family was resting.
  • Wallace looked around, with Austin trailing closely behind him. The Williams family was present—his father-in-law, Douglas Williams, and his mother-in-law, Yvonne Smith.
  • Sandra was the second oldest in the family, with a younger brother, Austin, and an older sister, Sharon. At that moment, Sharon was seated beside Yvonne, with her husband James Hutchinson below her.
  • James hailed from a wealthy family, making him a perfect suitor for Sharon. As Douglas' only son, Austin caught up and closed the door behind him, then casually sat on a stool.
  • "Today was really unusual, and a day like this only came by once in a blue moon. Lucas' finger was broken on the Sandler family's turf, in Zachary's presence no less." Austin coldly glanced at Wallace.
  • "Zachary?" Douglas frowned and looked at Sandra and Wallace out of reflex. After a while, he whispered, "Sandra, please take a seat."
  • Sandra sat on the other side of Douglas, whereas Wallace stood behind Sandra as he had always been whenever the family had a discussion in the past six years.
  • "Wallace, please take a seat, too." Douglas gestured. Sandra was taken aback to see her father take the initiative to let Wallace sit down for the first time in six years. Wallace didn't overthink it and sat down beside Sandra with a smile.
  • Douglas grabbed a few pages of paper from the side and gestured for Sandra to pass them to Wallace. Sandra glanced at the paper in her hand—a divorce agreement. Her beautiful face paled instantly as if her heart had been struck hard.
  • Six years ago, Sandra brought Wallace into the family out of courtesy against her family's objections to make up for her mistakes. Over the past six years, she has been with Wallace day and night. Although they exchanged few words, Wallace's presence had already become an integral part of her life.
  • Seeing this divorce agreement, Sandra couldn't help but feel a hint of reluctance. Sandra quickly recomposed herself, knowing she couldn't spend the rest of her life with Wallace out of guilt. Ultimately, she had to let go despite her reluctance. Moreover, the Williams family was in chaos. Her second uncle was eyeing her father's position as the head of the family. Having lived for herself for six years, she thought it was time to contribute to the family.
  • With these thoughts in mind, Sandra looked at Wallace, who was still smiling. Don't worry. After the divorce, I will make sure you are taken care of. I will make sure you will live in peace.
  • Douglas checked his watch and urged, "Sandra, get him to sign the document."
  • Sandra nodded, preparing to retrieve a pen, when a knock sounded on the banquet hall door, and Frankie, the butler, entered.
  • "Mr. Williams, Mr. Joshua Swift, head of the Swift family, is here. He wishes to speak with you on an urgent matter."
  • "What?" Douglas exclaimed, immediately rising to his feet. Excitement gleamed in his eyes as he instructed, "Lead the way, quickly."
  • A prominent figure in Rosetown, the Swift family was a leading pharmaceutical company, surpassing the Sandler family in status. As far as pharmaceutical companies were concerned, the Williams family was just a third-tier small family in Rosetown, incomparable to the top-tier powerhouse that was the Swift family.
  • Previously, Douglas had sought Joshua's assistance numerous times to rescue the family business, albeit never meeting him in person, which ultimately led to the decision to marry into the Sandler family. Thus, Joshua's unexpected visit held considerable significance.
  • As Douglas departed, Wallace's attention shifted to the divorce agreement held by Sandra. Tormented by inner demons for six years, he had inexplicably gained a beautiful wife, only to now face the apparent conclusion of their relationship. It seemed the Williams family was prepared to sever ties with their son-in-law.
