Chapter 8 Hitting the Nail on the Head

  • Everyone was taken aback by the sudden scene that unfolded before them.
  • No one expected Wallace to tear up the divorce papers.
  • Does he really believe this would benefit Sandra?
  • Amidst the fluttering pieces of paper, Sandra observed Wallace quietly.
  • She possessed a deeper understanding of him than anyone else in the Williams family. At that moment, a peculiar sensation stirred within her. Maybe he really can change my life.
  • Bang!
  • The abrupt sound of Austin slamming his fist on the coffee table broke the tension. Rising to his feet, he fixed a stern gaze on Wallace and asked, "Have you lost your senses, you idiot?"
  • Their discussion was interrupted. Wallace's impulsive act of tearing up the divorce papers put the family in a tough spot.
  • "Zachary knows you two were supposed to sign the divorce papers tonight," Yvonne added, angrily looking at Sandra. "Your dad promised to announce your divorce at the birthday party tonight. Now, what are we supposed to tell him?"
  • With the divorce papers shredded, Wallace remained Sandra's husband in name for the night.
  • Everyone glared at Wallace except Sandra, who smiled sweetly and said, "Thank you, Wallace."
  • For the first time in six years, Wallace had wished her a happy birthday.
  • Thinking about it, Sandra couldn't help but feel a lump in her throat. Six years ago, just after she had just come of age, a car accident brought a stranger into her home.
  • And that stranger turned out to be an idiot.
  • Since then, she had been mocked and wasted the best years of her life. But now, with the family in crisis, they wanted her to marry into the Sandler family to get through it.
  • "Am I just a tool to be used?" Sandra fought back tears, trying to stay strong, but it was so hard.
  • She slowly looked around at everyone, finally fixing her gaze on Douglas. Choking back tears, she asked, "Dad, do you really not care about me anymore?"
  • Douglas trembled, avoiding his daughter's gaze.
  • "Sandy."
  • Seeing Sandra's tearful eyes, Yvonne couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
  • Her expression softened, and she spoke gently, "Your father doesn't have a choice. Your second uncle's family is vying for his position as head of the family, and your brother isn't interested in the family business. Our family depends heavily on you and your sister."
  • "In Rosetown, only a few families are more influential than the Sandlers," James added. "Since returning from studying abroad, Zachary has become a rising star in Rosetown's business world. A marriage alliance with them would be beneficial for our family."
  • "Isn't it an obvious choice? One is an idiot, and the other is the eldest son of the Sandler family," Sharon remarked, casting a disapproving glance at Sandra.
  • "What if you had the unwavering support of the Sandler family and true freedom for Sandra?" Wallace's voice suddenly interjected.
  • The Williams family frowned, noticing Wallace's unusual behavior. Is this really the same son-in-law who never stood up for himself, never argued, and always just smiled foolishly?
  • "Wallace, shut up," James snapped angrily.
  • Sharon raised an eyebrow. "What's gotten into this idiot today?"
  • Sandra stared at Wallace, stunned.
  • Wallace smiled softly and stepped in front of Sandra, shielding her.
  • Her body trembled, feeling dazed. For six years, whenever Wallace was mistreated, she always defended him, but today, it was the other way around.
  • Can Wallace really protect me?
  • "I don't know if the Sandler family or the Swift family is more powerful, but I do know the Swift family is crucial for Sandra," Wallace said calmly. "The Sandler family is only interested in Sandra because Zachary is drawn to her beauty. Besides that, can they really help the Williams family?
  • "Even if they can, it would just turn the Williams family into their puppets. But the Swift family is different. They're the leading pharmaceutical company in Rosetown. A partnership with them would be mutually beneficial and a win-win situation. The Williams family wouldn't have to bow down to anyone."
  • Austin's face darkened. "Wallace, what nonsense are you spouting?"
  • Ignoring him, Wallace looked directly at Douglas and said, "I think what the Williams family wants isn't to live under someone else's thumb but to become strong on its own, right?"
  • Douglas' eyelids twitched.
  • Wallace's words hit the nail on the head.
  • As he had said, marrying into the Sandler family would only provide a backing for the Williams family.
  • In contrast, partnering with the Swift family would establish an equal relationship.
  • If the cooperation went well, the Williams family's current crisis could easily be resolved, and they might even reach new heights.
  • However, Douglas couldn't accept that Wallace was the one who pointed this out.
  • Not only Douglas but also the rest of the Williams family fell silent after hearing Wallace's words.
  • From their perspective, Wallace couldn't possibly have come up with such insights.
  • "Could it be Mr. Swift?" James exclaimed.
  • Everyone's eyes brightened.
  • That's right. With such sophisticated arguments, it has to be Mr. Swift who coached Wallace.
  • "Mr. Swift truly lives up to his reputation. He actually managed to teach Wallace to say such a big bunch of words," Sharon said sarcastically.
  • They all understood that Wallace's words had completely shaken Douglas' decision.
  • The Sandler family was merely a protector, but the Swift family was an ally.
  • Any sensible person would opt for the Swift family.
  • "I just need a day." Seeing Douglas still hesitating, Wallace continued, "If I can secure the contract with the Swift family tomorrow, I hope you'll stop interfering in Sandra's life and let her live as she wishes."
  • "If I can't secure the Swift family contract, I'll sign the divorce papers immediately."
  • This statement shocked everyone.
  • This son-in-law, who seemed foolish before... Something's different about him now. What's happened?
  • "Wallace, are you really not stupid anymore?" Finally, Sharon asked. Then, she shook her head self-deprecatingly and sneered. "Even if you've improved, what's the use? Based on what you just said, you're still worse than a fool."
  • The Swift family was a top-tier powerhouse in Rosetown.
  • In the past, the Williams family had repeatedly failed to secure a partnership with them. What made Wallace think he could guarantee the Swift family's support?
  • "Utterly delusional!" James couldn't help but scoff. "Who do you think you are? You think you can influence the plans of the Swift family?"
  • James felt extremely annoyed. Why does Joshua Swift meet him but not with me?
  • In just one day?
  • Standing quietly behind Wallace, Sandra couldn't help but clutch his sleeve involuntarily. Even though this sense of security wasn't rock solid, it still warmed her heart.
  • "Fine, I'll agree." Douglas pondered for a moment before decisively nodding at Wallace.
  • "Dad!"
  • "Douglas!"
  • Everyone exclaimed in surprise.
  • Douglas waved his hand to silence them. He was the ultimate authority in the family.
  • He looked at Wallace again and said softly, "I'm giving you a chance, not because I have faith in you, but as a birthday favor for Sandy. You're not worthy of it; only a father like myself is fit to bestow such a gift."
  • Even though Joshua had shown goodwill, expecting to sign a contract within a day was like a pipe dream.
  • This might turn out for the best. If I yield to Wallace, it might alleviate some of Sandy's concerns, and she won't be as conflicted about my decision later on.
  • As Douglas contemplated this, a sly smile flashed in his eyes.
  • Wallace didn't dwell on it. His gaze was clear as he said, "Thank you, Dad."
  • Douglas' expression stiffened as Wallace didn't address him incorrectly.
  • As long as Wallace and Sandra remained married, he technically remained Douglas' son-in-law.
  • However, Douglas had never truly regarded him as such.
  • Wallace's sudden way of addressing him made him feel uneasy. The smug look in his eyes from just now disappeared in an instant.
  • As the tension thickened, there was a sudden knock on the door, and Frankie entered.
  • "Mr. Williams, Mr. Zachary Sandler wishes to speak with you. He wants to personally convey birthday wishes to Miss Sandra."
