Chapter 1 Preparing For His Wife's Birthday

  • URBAN BOOK
  • The streets of Las Vegas were busy.
  • The road filled with cars, car honks, yelling of busy men who were trying to bypass the road traffic, and navigate their way through.
  • Students walking by the side of the road, discussing and giggling at each other.
  • It was a busy Monday morning as usual, the sun casting a glow.
  • ‘’ Sabastian Grey!’’ a tall man of about forty years of age came to view, as he walked into the bar.
  • ‘’ Yes sir,’’ a man in his late twenties came running to attend to his boss.
  • ‘’ I see that you’ve cleaned the bar and opened it even before the opening time.’’
  • The man chuckled, obviously impressed with Sabastian’s good job.
  • ‘’ I left home early today, so as to return early, Boss.’’ Sabastian replied, his head hung low.
  • ‘’ Oh, you want to shift with Edward? Is there a reason?’’ Sabastian’s Boss, Mr. Ethan couldn’t help but ask.
  • “Yes sir. Today is my wife’s birthday so I ought to buy her a gift, that was why I came early to cover Edward’s shift, while he does mine in the evening.’’
  • Sabastian narrated, causing a smile to appear on Mr. Ethan’s lips.
  • ‘’ That’s very good. You have my permission. You can tell me if you need my help with anything at all.’’ Mr. Ethan said.
  • ‘’ No problem, Mr. Ethan.’’ Sabastian returned the smile.
  • He was grateful that Mr. Ethan accepted him despite the fact that he wasn't competent and knew nothing about being a waiter or bartender in a bar.
  • Sabastian had always been a live-in-son-in-law of the Greek family and as such, was subjected to doing all the chores in the house.
  • He wanted a change, so he decided to find a job for himself, since all he ever did for the past three years was wash dishes, mop the ground, despite the fact that the Greek family has over fifty maids and house helps.
  • It was all because of his mother-in-law, Lara, who has never for a day spoke nicely to him, let alone treat him like her son-in-law.
  • “ You've been doing well. Since you came to my bar, business has been booming so much, maybe it's because of your handsome face.”
  • Mr Ethan teased, causing a small laugh to escape Sabastian’s throat.
  • “ It's not because of that, Boss. Business has always been doing well even before I came.” Sabastian denied.
  • “ I'm grateful for working at my bar, take this.”
  • Mr Ethan stretched forth a white envelope towards Sabastian who's brows raised in question.
  • “ What is this, Boss?” He asked, obviously unaware of what was inside the envelope.
  • He had thought it was a sack letter, causing his heart to skip a beat, but seeing Mr Ethan smile, while nudging at him to take the envelope, he felt at peace.
  • He slowly took the envelope and felt what was inside with his palm.
  • His eyes widened in shock when it turned out to be money!
  • He got an incentive from his boss!
  • “ This is a little incentive for your hard work.” Mr Ethan said.
  • “ Thank you so much, Boss. I really sincerely appreciate it!” Sabastian kept bowing every second.
  • He was so excited!
  • Lately, since his wife's birthday was fast approaching, he has been thinking of ways to get her a gift which she’d cherish, but his savings wasn't enough to get the jewellery he had seen in a show glass while returning home every night.
  • He was short of a thousand dollars, so getting an incentive from his boss, even though he wasn't sure if the money was up to a thousand dollars, Sabastian was so excited.
  • “ You can get your wife a gift using that. Make her happy.”
  • Mr Ethan said once more before walking into his office inside the bar.
  • Sabastian's smile grew by each second as he felt the money in his palm.
  • “ I hope she likes the jewellery.” Sabastian muttered and put the envelope inside his pocket.
  • Just when he was about to go, he heard someone calling him from behind.
  • “ Trash!” shouted Edward, one of Sabastian's fellow employees.
  • Edward was the one Sabastian had helped with the morning shift so as to leave early in the evening to get his wife her birthday gift.
  • Turning around with lazy eyes, Sabastian replied, “ What is it that you want, Edward?”
  • He didn't bother to hide his irritation towards Edward.
  • “ I heard you did my morning shift just because today is your wife's birthday! Today is also my dead mother's birthday, I will also leave in the evening.”
  • Edward taunted, his accomplices laughing behind him.
  • They were also employees in the bar, but they follow Edward anywhere he went like a puppy.
  • “ It's not funny.” Sabastian frowned slightly, his brows furrowed together.
  • “ Did I say anything funny here?” Edward thundered, his voice filled with anger and hatred towards Sabastian.
  • “ I have to get my wife her birthday gift, that was why I helped you in your morning shift. Isn't it mutual to do the same for me? And moreover, even though you were the one in charge of this morning shift, you're just coming now, at 9am.” Sabastian said.
  • “ Do I look like I fucking care? To hell with you and your bitch wife!” Edward shouted, causing Sabastian to fold his fists in anger.
  • He couldn't watch Edward calling his wife a bitch, but at the same time, he couldn't afford to lose his job.
  • “ I won't have you insult my wife, understood!” Sabastian took slow steps towards Edward and gritted his teeth in front of him.
  • The aura emitting from him was more dangerous than that of the devil.
  • It made adrenaline rush through Edward’s spine, but he tried to maintain composure, even though he was obviously afraid of Sabastian.
  • “ What….what….what will you do?” Edward stuttered as he tried defending himself.
  • He didn't want his accomplices to see through his weak side let alone Sabastian.
  • “ Words won't be enough to describe what I might do to you.” Sabastian muttered, his eyes darkened.
  • The tension among them became palpable and Edward’s legs began to quiver in fear.
  • “ You're…. you're shaking, Edward!” One of his accomplices said, cause all eyes to fall on Edward's legs.
  • “ Are you crazy? Why would I be afraid of this twerp!” Edward stuttered as he spoke, trying to steady his legs.
  • “ You must be seeing things now, Felix. Why will Edward be afraid of the twerp?” Another of Edward's accomplices added.
  • “ Maybe I'm now seeing things.” The first one said, nodding his head.
  • “ I think you drank too much at the club that was why you're seeing things. Just get some hangover drugs.” Felix said.
  • “ Don't think this is over, bastard!” Edward yelled, his eyes red with anger.
  • He was so embarrassed and angry at the same time.
  • “ You're always welcome, Edward.” Sabastian brushed pass Edward, not without tapping his shoulder.
  • “ Take your hands of me, bastard!” Edward threw Sabastian's hand off his shoulder.
