• Sarena Snowflakes fell on my eyelashes as I hustled down Madison Avenue, fifteen minutes late for my interview with Mr. Fancy Pants Lawyer. I hadn’t bothered to do an internet search on my new employer—I was lucky Devlynn hooked me up with a job. I was fresh out of my second year at NYU and desperately needed to earn money to complete my degree. Mom had offered to mortgage the house, and my sister-in-law said she’d flip the bill, but I didn’t want anyone’s help. I wanted to stand on my own two feet.
