• "This way," Elias leads us down the stairs that slope into the basement of the castle in the west wing.
• This particular basement exists under the common bathrooms relegated to the castle staff, and it smells of mold, dampness, and various other odors related to a secluded, dark, underground place. We are careful not to slip on the mold and fungi that dominate the staircase. One flashlight brightens our way, and I have to spend some effort to keep myself from gagging because of the stench.
