Chapter 8 Don't Forget to Bring the Cash

  • Jessie came back home and sat alone for a bit.
  • Memories from the last few years raced through her mind.
  • Meeting Chase, falling in love, having a child, secretly getting married, until everything fell apart, the miscarriage, the divide between Chase and her ...
  • She also thought about the sudden bankruptcy of the Summers family, her dad still in the ICU, and her working part-time jobs under the Thompson family's siege.
  • She endured it all.
  • But today, with the news of her stomach cancer, she couldn't handle it anymore.
  • With that in mind, she dialed a number on her phone.
  • After six months, Chase's voice returned. "So, you finally come around and decided to get a divorce?"
  • "Chase, I surrender. Let's get a divorce ... " Jessie's voice faltered as she finally said what she'd kept inside for six months.
  • On the other end, Chase stayed quiet for a moment before mocking, "Jessie, what game are you playing?"
  • He knew Jessie well. He expected her to fight till the end.
  • Why is she giving up after just six months?
  • Jessie took a breath and calmly asked, "Isn't this what you wanted? Anyway, I'm home. Don't keep me waiting too long."
  • Jessie heard a child crying in the background, adding to her frustration, so she hung up.
  • After the call, Jessie teared up silently on the floor.
  • Her home was wrecked, her child was gone, and her life was near its end.
  • But Chase seemed unbothered, already starting anew with someone else.
  • Meanwhile, Chase watched the rain, holding an umbrella as he left the building.
  • "Chase, Charles is crying a lot today. Can you soothe him?"
  • Linda approached with Charles, surprised to see Chase leaving. "Are you heading out now? Where are you off to at this hour?"
  • Chase glanced at the child and bluntly replied, "He'll quiet down when he's tired. And don't ask about my business!"
  • With that, he left without a glance back.
  • Linda held the child as she watched Chase go, her gentle expression turning dark.
  • Six months passed, and Jessie is still clinging to Chase?!
  • ...
  • A black Rolls-Royce pulled up at Jessie's villa.
  • Chase got out of the car.
  • After six months, little changed outside, save for more weeds. Jessie only mowed on weekends, showing no interest in upkeep.
  • Chase frowned and entered the villa.
  • The door was unlocked. Jessie had left it ajar.
  • Inside, he found Jessie waiting in the living room.
  • "I thought you'd have wine and candles," Chase said, taking a seat across from Jessie.
  • Jessie glanced at him but remained silent.
  • Before, she'd prepare romantic surprises.
  • But that was in the past. They couldn't go back.
  • There were no wine or candles on the table, just a divorce agreement.
  • "Look it over. I've signed. Once you do too, it'll be official, and you'll be free," Jessie said, offering the pen.
  • Chase twirled the pen, flipping through the agreement.
  • His expression darkened.
  • Suddenly, he chuckled, "1.5 million? I was wondering why you agreed. Turns out it's just about money, right? Do you think you're worth 1.5 million, Jessie?"
  • Jessie stayed calm. "I could've claimed half of your assets. Thompsons got richer after Summers' fall, right? You gained hundreds of millions."
  • Chase snorted. He said nothing more and signed the agreement.
  • Then he stood, ready to leave.
  • "We have to submit the papers at the court tomorrow. Don't forget," Jessie reminded.
  • "I remember. No need to remind me!" Chase snapped.
  • "No," Jessie said. "I mean, don't forget to bring the cash."
  • "What did you say?"
