Chapter 11 Foolish
- Mu Chenfeng's expression grew cold again as soon as we got into the car.
- “I heard that you offered yourself to be kidnapped by them?”
- His tone had lost all the warmth it had earlier too.
- “They were wrecking the place and beating up our staff. This happened because of me, so I can't just cover up.”
- “So, you think that you're a hero now for taking responsibility?” His tone grew colder with hints of sarcasm.
- I explained, “I'm no hero, but they were coming for me. If I didn't stand up like I did, more people would've gotten hurt, and the mall would've sustained greater losses......”
- “Foolish.” He interrupted me.
- I had no idea how that was foolish. Would it have been smart to just hide like a coward instead?
- But now that the issue had been resolved, there was no need for me to argue with him any further. No one could possibly change the mind of someone as proud as him, so I chose to keep quiet.
- moments later, he said, “As a woman with a child, your safety should always be your number one priority. Everything else doesn't matter that much.”
- That was probably the most humane thing I'd ever heard from him ever since I met him.
- I couldn't remember the last time someone had ever said something this heartwarming to me.
- I teared up a little as I thanked him, but he just looked out the window without responding.
- The car drove back to the city center and parked in front of a huge building where Mu Chenfeng got out of the car. Jiang Xuanlong then brought me along with him as he proceeded to park the car. There were a lot of things that I had wanted to ask him about, but decided not to when I saw the grim look on his face.
- “We're here, Ms. Lin. Please get out of the car.” Jiang Xuanlong finished parking the car and opened the door for me.
- “Mr. Jiang, you can drop the formalities and just call me Anan next time.”
- He didn't respond and just told me to go with him.
- I looked up and saw that he had brought me to Huatai Law Firm.
- Jiang Xuanlong explained that Liu Jun had signed the divorce papers and he had brought me here to sign my part.
- I really didn't like how this was arranged for me, but I agreed to sign when I remembered what Liu Jun did to me that night.
- Once I confirmed that I would gain custody of the child, I signed the papers right away.
- Actually, I felt a little sad at that moment, not for Liu Jun, but for the three years that I had wasted.
- We left the law firm and returned to the Maple Garden Estate. I couldn't help but ask Jiang Xuanlong, “Mr. Jiang, what did you say to Xu Jiakai earlier to shut her up?”
- He didn't answer me, so I couldn't do much about it.
- A moment later, he said, “Whatever you would like to know, you may ask Chief directly. I have no right to answer those questions.”
- I pouted at the thought of that, as I knew Mu Chenfeng was even more unlikely to tell me if I asked him instead.
- The rest of the drive was silent as we made our way to Maple Garden Estate.
- Right as we arrived at the entrance, I heard Xiaoyang's laughter. I went in and saw Xiaoyang wearing a children's swimsuit and was learning to swim under the company of a maid.
- When he saw me, he happily called out to me and told me he had almost learnt how to swim.
- The maid explained to me that Mr. Mu had told them about the child's bad physical condition and that he needs physical training, so he had someone deliver some swimming attire over.
- “Mr. Mu said he'd teach me basketball once my body gets better. He said he's a pro!” Xiaoyang said.
- I felt happy seeing him having fun, but all of this had come too suddenly.
- With a fancy villa, nice clothes and food, Xiaoyang had been spoiled.
- I was worried that this was all just a dream, as Xiaoyang wouldn't be able to accept it if all of this were to suddenly disappear and we were to return to our lives in poverty.
- I wondered if I would be able to accept it as well.
- “Mama, what are you thinking about? Do you want to swim as well?” Xiaoyang's words snapped me back into reality.
- “No, I don't know how to swim. Let this lady swim with you.” I said with a smile.
- “If you can't swim, you can have Mr. Mu teach you!” Xiaoyang said innocently.
- The maids looked at each other and laughed. Mu Chenfeng wasn't around, but I still blushed anyway as my heart raced at the thought of it.
- Right as we were laughing about it, a black Audi drove into the villa parking lot. The driver opened the back-car door, and a beautiful woman in her fifties came out. She was dressed in expensive clothes and wore a lot of jewelry.
- I felt that I had seen her before somewhere, and remembered that it was probably at Mu Chenfeng's wedding.
- The maids quickly ran forward with scared looks on their faces, bowed in unison and greeted, “Good day, madam.”
- I nodded out of respect towards her as well, “Good day.”
- She walked towards me and said with an arrogant look on her face, “Do you know who I am?”
- I had already guessed who she was by now, but kept quiet and shook my head anyway.
- “I am Chenfeng's mother. You said this child is his. Is that true?” she asked me.
- I was unable to answer that question, as I hadn't been able to confirm the truth behind it. I tried asking Mu Chenfeng about it but he didn't admit to it and just humiliated me in return. I kept quiet.
- “Why aren't you talking?” her tone grew hostile and the look in her eyes was fierce.
- I didn't know what to say. What if it wasn't the case if I said yes? And if I said no, wouldn't that be the same as saying that Mu Chenfeng's words at the wedding were a lie?
- “You seriously don't even know whose child that is?” her tone got even more aggressive, “Or are you just hungry for the wealth of my Mu family and got yourself a child to cheat us? I have seen a lot of women like you. If the child is really Chenfeng's, the child stays and you leave. If the child is not Chenfeng's, you will take the child and leave with him.”
- Her tone was decisive with no room for negotiation.
